Caution when doing intank mods

If you are doing intank mods, be careful with the black umbrella pick up foot in your tank. As I was doing mine last weekend it became very appearant that that little rubber foot gets really brittle after sitting in diesel fuel for 8 years. As I was expanding the diameter of the hole to make sure the SS pick up tube extended past the suction port on the side it started cracking and small holes started to appear in the unbrella part (the part that sits on the bottom of your tank.) OOPS. Now what? look online for replacement part number. Well eaisier said than done. Y2K ford parts and Trademotion say Nope part not found. well guess what its not called a pick up foot its called a filter assy. and its part number is E5TZ-9J306-BA and it costs about $20

Do you need it? Debateable. ITP sells a big pick up kit that does not even use a foot it is just a 5/8" SS tube that extends to 1/4" above the bottom of the tank. Yet they tell us when working with the smaller stock 3/8" tube to make sure we measure and to put the stock foot back on, IDK maybe it has something to do with the performance during low fuel occurances.

The screen on the end of the pickup is a lot coarser than the screen that is located inside the intake of the Ford fuel pump.
Very shortly after I Hutched my tank, my fuel pump clogged up and I had to replace it.

I put in the ITP in-tank kit (with additional filter) this weekend. I did not put the pickup screen back on the pickup. Did not realize that until it was too late but figured I had an extra filter now so it wouldn't hurt much. What are the thoughts on the screen. In or out?

I also did my intank mods last week end. We all should have got together and did it together. Mass intank mod day. That would have been cool. It look slike the screen is a rock catcher. Not gonna stop much there. I put mine back in just in case. How long did it take everyone to do their intank mods? just wondering if everyone had as much time as I did. Took me about 2 hours and also install my HPX in that time also.

Took me and a buddy 4 hours taking our time. Most of that was removing and re-installing the skid plate and tank straps. The kit itself was a breeze. I haven't been through a whole take of fuel yet so I haven't really noticed any difference....hopefully I will.

Dan - Did you put the extra filter on? Would that have solved the problem?

PSS - Too bad Altoona is so far away or I would bring my truck to a pro's shop to do my intank mods

Great post BD. I would say you could have mine. It is in a parts box in the shed where it has been for quite some time now. Probably not any better off than yours. Let me know if you want/need it, it's yours. I will have a look at it.

Here's what I did. I know it's not a filter for suction, and it's a gasoline filter, but I read somewhere here that it's been used before, so I went with it. It's just a $4.00 Fram from Wally-World, so if I end up having to replace it with a real one later, so be it...

That looks simple, I think I'll do it. I did the hutch mod b/c of the picker upper filters got stopped up. I was wanting to go with a screw on canister style filter but unsure where to get a base that it screws too.

ITP sells the kit with the filter, mount, & bracket. I may go that way eventually, but for now this is working. The cool thing about the ITP one is that you can ditch the under-hood filter then. Really cleans things up under the hood...

Doubt it -- remember, when you do the in-tank mods, you remove the mixing chamber which has filter screens in it. That's why you need some kind of filter before the pump -- I left my pick-up screen in, BTW. I started to leave it out, then thought better of it.
