I want something stronger than the d 60 FF that is in the rear of my 78 f250. What about a dana 80 out of a 94-02 dodge, or are there to many diffrences to swap them in my 78. What about a sterling 10.25, I heard they give them away practically.
I'm looking for a wieght carrying axle, not nessisary the ability to handle big hp
Thanks,
dustin
even if u put the biggest axle u can buy, the engine/trans/brakes are only good for so much weight.
u can upgrade the shafts. i think thats the weak link on the 60.
i know my 8" toy axles are the same diameter, and spline count as the 60 in my ford. and MUCH larger than the d44 axles in the front.
I have not broken the 60 yet but I don't want to I would like to make it stronger, because I'll be doing a frame off, upgrading everything, From the brakes to making eather boxing in the frame, or taking 1/8' metal plate and wraping in around the frame on the outside of the "C" all the way. If I put upgraded axle shafts and a extra capacity finned cover, and synthetic mobil 1, will the 60 handle the pin wieght of a 6 horse with living quarters. I figure 2400-3000lbs road ready pin wieght so that will put about 7500 in the little D 60 with the back of the truck loaded( I will run 19.5 load H tires/wheels from Rickson.

Put in a 14 bolt FF. yes a Cheby axle. I just got done putting mine in.........tonight. Was EXTREMELY worth it! Looks like it came from the factory this way!
The 14 bolt is a very strong axle, but I don't know if the rims are compatible. A sterling is also a very strong axle, so if you're brand-loyal then it's probably the way to go.
