I will be getting a winch soon for my 78 F250 That wieghs 5K and will "grow" I will run dual optuma yellow tops. What Brand and size should I go with A Warn electric 9500 maybe? Where is a good place to buy a winch and what should I pay for it?
Dustin
well do you want new or used? ebay has some good deals on used warns.....i woudl reccomend warn
i like my 8274-50 because the spur gear design has been aorund since the begining of winches, i like it because of the 73 ft a minute free spool line speed. if im dragging myself up a trail and i catch traction....i dont have to sit and wait on the winch to catch up. My truck weighs right at 6k lbs and ive never had to use a ****** block. its surprised me with its "8k lb" rating
i also have experiance with a warn m-12000, they are stout and extremely slow....
what about the cheap winches, obviously you get what you pay for but these 12,000 lb no name wiches for 500 bucks, or even the milemarkers for about 600, what separates the warn/ramsey winches from the rest. I doubt i'll use it a lot but when i do i'm sure it'll be nice to have.
ive seen several of the cheap winches(most of the brands in person) either broken in half, a bad solenoid pack, burned up motors or something screwed on the inside. fishy blew his no name 8k lb winch up 3 times before he bought a used warn. buddy of mine broke a superwinch 9k in half, ive also seen a mm 12k broke in half
i strongly recommend staying far far away from cheapo winches. they may be decent for a small sized car trailer or something but not something i would want to depend on to get me back home! however i will say WHEN my cheapo winch worked it impressed me! it drug my heavy rig (axles dragging mud) for 30-40 yards at a time.
i have found a couple of Warns 8274 winches and the best part is i paid $75 a piece! one worked on the spot, th other i just acquired and needs new solenoids but a small price to pay since they are more than a grand brand new!
keep your eyes open and just let ppl know you arew looking for one. also keep an eye on ebay sometimes a good deal will come along
i actually had 2 winches i started out with. the first one broke once so i called Harbor Freight and they sent me the parts. then the next time it broke i just pulled parts off the other winch. then it broke for the third time called harobor frieght again and they again sent me the parts... of course not without some arguing with the manager about how the winch was still under warratny! then i broke it a forth time and Harbor Freight said i out -did my warranty and there was nothing more they could do. so i used the parts off the other winch until it broke again.
