Comp 35-308-8 cam

Ok guys, I have my motor (5.0) mostly apart and figured since I'm doing all this work, that will go ahead and upgrade the cam. I am not at all liking the stock cam in this truck at all. Since a few people on here seem to swear by the Comp 35-308-8 cam, I think I'll give it a try. The questions I have are:

1.) Where is the cheapest place to find one?

2.) How pissed off is the SD going to be with this cam?

Any other info that I need to know will be greatly appreciated. Thanks for the help.

The cam is SD friendly. Idle quality and vacuum for MAP sensor function are retained.

Clean up your exhaust... ***** can the choked stock Y pipe and throw on some longtubes. Your SOTP dyno will be very happy with this combo.

Mike

p.s. Lovely visual 51dueller!

I have a full size bronco W 302/efi. I installed a roller but to 351 firing order 302 firing order beats up on the crank & shortens its life span, 351 firing order corrects this problem !! Ask about it ! But i did install a Mass air flow kit, ford motor sports. I also installed a 347 kit in it, it's a tourqe monster & that is what I wanted !!!!!

302 FO beats up on the crank & shortens the life span? No. There's thousands of 302's, 289's, 390's, 352's, yada, yada, yada that run with the old firing order and live long happy lives. Does the 351 FO work better? yea. Otherwise Ford wouldn't have used it.

Thanks everyone. The chart helps a ton!

I am putting a set of Summit (Pacesetter) shorties on it when the motor goes back together. It will also be getting true duals with hiflow cats.

baddad457 , So you know engines like i said 351w firing order is easy on the bottom end & a 302 new w/351w firing order will last longer than a stock 302 w/std.firing order !!!!! Don

That'a what I heard ... something about it takes the strain off of one of the main bearings. But like I said it's just something I heard....

some stuff I found online.....

http://forums.stangnet.com/archive/index.php/t-473025.html

agreed. yes the 351w firing order takes stress off the #1 main bearing, but it moves that stress to the #2 and #5 main bearings. becareful if you do this, and make sure the #2 main is in good shape as the last few 351w's i have looked at have had spun #2 main bearings, though the #1 main was fine.

The firing order will be different, and that's the only reason I can think of to change the cams. The 289/302 firing order puts a little extra stress on the front main bearing that the 351 will relieve a little, but unless you're really talking about a lot of power or hard driving it's more precautionary than anything else.

I've always read that it was done to revise the loading on the main bearings.
Yes, this is the reason I have always heard also. Think about it, with the firing order 1-5-4-2-6-3-7-8 the first main bearing is loaded by two consecutive pistons firing one right after the other with the harmonic balancer right there to take the shock....with the 1-3-7-2-6-5-4-8 this loading is transferred to the rear main journal with has much more support and is balanced by the flywheel/clutch or torque converter assembly. Now I do not have the specifics to why this arrangement is better, but according to Ford the latter firing order is much easier on the crankshafts. All I know is I did snap the snout off of the crank in the Shelby many years ago, it broke right behind the #1 jounal....luckily the damage to the block was minimal and repairable.

FYI.....did anyone ever think about why the later model 5.0 has such a distinctive exhaust sound that differs from an early SB Ford? It is the firing order that makes the difference.

I've noticed that myself. A buddy of mine thinks I'm crazy... he gave me the old verbage... "a 5.0 is a 5.0 is a 5.0. You'r hearing things."

It's my opinion the 351w firing order 302's have a distinct crisp sound that doesn't match the old firing order. My old 302 truck had the 1-5-4 order and sounded much different right off the factory floor to the 94.
