Those are engineering numbers

What are the actual Date casting numbers?

with block number with change up letter of M, I would have to assume it is a later block.

Location of actual date casting characters :

Heads: inside the oil galley

Block: starter area near other casting number

Intake right on top with these marks (ie: *3L24 * ) on either sie

You got that D3VE-9C485-KA number off the emissions/engine ID tag on the engine.
Do you know what D3VE-9C485-KA refers to?

The Ford Motor Company part number for that ID TAG!!

It has absolutely nothing to do with any engine casting number.

Anything to do with engines is in engine group 6000.

Emission related items are in the fuel section, group 9000.

9C485 is in the 9000 group.

The Ford Motor Company parts catalogs only show one casting related number for 1971 midyear 1979 429/460 engines: D1VE-6015-AB. That number is necessary to know because the casting number changed in midyear 1979 to D9TE-6015-AB. When the casting number changed in 1979, the flywheel, harmonic balancer and (weighted) spacer also changed. It is very important to know what the casting number is in relation to those parts, otherwise using the wrong flywheel, spacer or balancer will cause engine vibrations.

There is tons of info in the FTE 385 engine series forum where these engines are normally disacussed in detail.

Maybe head to it and do some reading .
This forum is more about how topics relate to the 67-72 truck

if that 429 has dove heads thats the one id get,i personaly have run both 429's and 460's my prefrence is the 429 any day over the 460. ya i no itll be less torqey but it seems to me they rev up quiker being a shorter stroke.

not the best pic but 429/460' fit pretty nice in these old trucks, this is the 429 i had in my 71 for the drag season
