hello....ive been searching for a set of heads for my 87 150 w/a 5.0 , mass air conversion, headers , and other bolt ons. ive got everything i need to go through the motor this winter put a torque cam, reseal, ect.... i just need heads. the gt40ps seem like the cheapest route.... ive already read about the header to plug clearance and im pretty confident i can make that work (based on the tricks ive read in here). my only question is , will my 87 accessories bolt back up with the p heads without any problems?
the brackets should. the question is what headers do you plan to run because of that style head they are few and far between that actually perform decent at best. i would personally run a regular gt40 head or find something aluminum to run this way you can install any type of header you wish that would be more suitable to your build
ive already got a set of headman shorties on it.....ill have the engine on the stand, so i figured set the head in place, bolt a header on, put my plugs in and then see if i need 90 degree boots, shorter plugs, header wrap to protect the boots, ect. in other words it should be easy to figure out what i need to fab with it on the engine stand......
worse case i figured since my headers are kinda rusty anyway, i could just order a set of mustang headers for the gt40p and have my y pipe redone to fit them...
i understand , im not dead set on the 40p's at all, but go on ebay an look what you can get a good used set for...... 250.00! thats why i was leaning twords it
but then
my wife said for christmas shed "let" me get a summit speed card with the 360 days no interest on orders over 500.00! so forget price now.....im thinking the performer rpm 5.0 aluminums! ive always wanted a set and my summit brand cam that i have already for the truck matches identcally the duration and lift of the edelbrock performer plus camshaft. so it would be essentally matched (according to edelbrock). i do now have another question if i go this route...
the performer rpm heads are stud mounted rockers and my e7's now are obviously pedestal mount. if i get the stud mounted heads, some good rockers made for stud mount....will everything line up in my valve train? this sounds stupid i know but will my pushrods and all line up?
also i got just summit brand pushrods for this build, but if i get the edelbrock heads, i would think i should get hardened push rods with those new beefed up springs correct?
I agree with you about the Ps being easier to find. Around here we have more non P heads come up for sale which surprises me. Only a few vehicles had the non P heads being the gen1 Lightning, 93-95 Cobra, and the 96 (some 97) Explorer/Mountaineer. The Ps were produced from 97-01 in all the V8 Explorer/Mountaineers. Anyway, enough about that.
If you got with the Performers, there is no comparison to any E7 or GT40 head. I need to get me one of those Summit Speed Cards!
I would use the Performer pedestal mount heads myself. You go too big on the valves and such and you will start losing low speed velocity and torque to move that heavy truck. I would use the pedestal mount 1.94 valve heads on a truck. Then use the Crane 1.7 bolt-on Cobra roller rockers. Cheaper and easier.
well the performer pedestal mount and the performer rpm stud mounted are the same heads, only the performer has hookups for emmisions, and the rpm doesnt. im not running any egr or smog pump, so thats why i want the rpms. thats why i asked how hard it will be to go from pedestal mount to stud.
both sets of heads come with your choice of 2.02/1.60 or 1.90/1.60

The std GT40's were also used in Marine applications starting in 1988. So don't pass up cheap boats without looking under the hood first.
