Porting D0OE 351W heads

So I'm slowly but surely getting ready to swap a 351 into the F250. I'm planning to port the D0OE heads.

In the exhaust port pictured, there's a ruddy great protrusion cast into the exhaust port off of the valve guide. What is it and how much of it can be ground away?

Understanding the exhaust port opening should be smaller than the manifold opening - and looking at the carbon build-up in the pic - should the top of the port be opened up? There's a smaller line of carbon at the floor, I was thinking I'd open up the rest of the port until there's the same sized lip all the way around.

Thanks.

I just did a set. Ground off the hump up to the valve guide. The hump was for the Thermactor Air injection passage that was drilled on some. I used a header gasket to see where I needed to open up the port, but only opened the roof and sides, that's where most of the flow is anyway. Blended it all down into the bowl under the valve. Took me about 6 hrs to do it all.

sorry bad pic but its all I have. These are a set of CNC ported early 351 heads. As you can see there is a lot of room there.

"Here is Mark's porting routine in both intake and exhaust ports. He completely removes the exhaust-valve guide riser from the port, which greatly reduces restriction and won't hinder valve-stem support."

I found this article on porting Ford heads, and here's a pic of a port job that completely eliminates the valve guide casting on the exhaust side. Anyone ever gone that far? They claim it doesn't affect anything; if so, why wouldn't you?

From what I have gathered is a teardrop/wing cut into the guide boss will flow more than just a round valve stem.
