GT40, GT40P, performance heads

What is the difference between the GT40 and GT40P heads? I've read that the GT40P heads require different headers or exhaust manifolds than the rest of the cylinder heads, what's the difference with them? In my quest for more performance for my 90 Bronco with 302FI I'm looking at other heads for it. Before I go to the salvage yard I need to know what I'm looking for. I'd like to go with the Ford or Edelbrock aluminum heads but they may be out of my budget so I was looking at the Ford GT40 cast heads. I have the E7TE heads on it now with some porting, should I just stay with them and increase the valve size from the 1.78" intake/1.46" exhaust up to 1.84"/1.54" or just look for something better?

The P heads have angle spark plugs that will hit headers that are not designed for them.

I have the "P" heads, they are a bit of a redesign. For one thing, they have oval exhaust ports rather than square, and as RTM said, the plugs are angled differently, they are actually straighter and that's what causes the header interference, but not with all headers. I tried several different sets that I have to see what the problems were, and found quite a few different clearance issues.

Here are some links to the most informative sites I have found regarding these heads:

Hope this helps, -TD

The bolt pattern for the exhaust manifolds on the "P" heads is different from all other Windsor engines. It is diagonal and requires matching exhaust manifolds. You WILL NOT be able to use your existing manifolds with these heads.

I don't think this is true. My buddy installed his stock 5.0 headers on his P heads. The only problem he had was he kept melting spark plug wires. This work or head swap was done in my garage so I saw it done first hand.

This is definitely not true. As I said, I have the P heads and several sets of old headers laying around, most of which were made before the P heads were introduced. Also bolted up a pair of factory shorties from an '88 Mustang, all of them bolt up just fine, the only differences are the port shape and the plug angle. If you click on the first link in my earlier post and scroll down the page, you will see pics of the P head ports. Pretty clear that the bolt pattern is the same. Perhaps you were thinking of some of the aftermarket heads? -TD
