I posted this in the exhaust section, but thought I might get some good insight from here, too.
I took my truck to the local muffler shop today. The owner recommended a Magnaflow Oval muffler for my truck. (6" oval. 18" length. stock 2.5" inlet/outlet). Now personally, I have never heard of this brand, but then again I don't shop for mufflers much. He said that if I wanted something just a bit more throaty that wouldn't wake the neighbors, this would be my guy. My question is, has anyone ever used/ heard of these mufflers and what kind of reputation do they have? He swears by them and will back it with a lifetime guarantee, although he said it shouldn't have too many problems after he sets it a little farther back from the cat. (Apparently that's what's been toasting the stock one now). Oh. one last thing. Has anybody ever priced one of these guys? He wants $85 for the muffler alone, which doesn't seem too bad after you factor in the typical dealer markup.
I have a magnaflow muffler on my 86 f-150 and i think that it is a great muffler for this motor. But i would not plan on getting any sound out of it if you still have your cats in place. When i first got mine installed it was tiny, and i mean a teeny tiny bit louder than stock. But when my cats plugged and i pulled them out and had just a pipe put in their place it was definetly louder. Has a low throaty sound and a deep rumble when u let off. It wont wake up your neighbors but people will know when your coming, if u got any more questions just write back.

got it put in. yeah, you're right. it isn't a lot louder, but it does sound a lot cleaner. the old original guy had gotten so bad that when you rolled it around on the shop floor it sounded like an oversized rainstick. (you know, the ones with the beads inside that you turn upside-down to hear the "rain") overall, i'm pleased. i think with an actual FIPK it'll sound great. right now i've only removed the snorkel and put in a stock replacement k&n. a little difference in tone, but not much.
