What is the best brand of wiring harness to get. i have a 77 F250 and i want to re-wire it to cut down on bad grounds and shorts and broken wire. i just don't want the hassle. Ive heard of painless wiring harnesses but didn;t know of any others or what was best
I just received my centech harness and it will be some work to put it in, but I think it will be a good one. All of the main connectors were made up for me and I was able to get all of my switches with it also. Detailed instructions came with the harness too. I paid over 500 for the thing, but that included a OEM heater switch, ignition switch, wiper kit/switch, light switch and the necessary wire. You'll have to supply the wires for headlights/tailights/door jambs etc. but that is with most harnesses. IMO, if you are not doing a total restoration, there are good complete used harnesses for much less and will be just fine.
I looked at replacement harnesses, but ended up taking the best one I could find and then tearing it all apart, inspecting it, soldering and heat shrinking bad spots, and then installing it. This was by far the cheapest way to go. I got mine at a junkyard for $30, if I remember correctly.
I am a firm believer in solder and heat shrink or liquid electrical tape. The crimp connectors aren't a good way to do a repair, and if you have the harness laying on a workbench, everything is easy to do (you aren't under the truck)
Another tip: if you do wire repairs, try to replace the section with the same color wire. It is a lot easier than trying to figure out which "red" wire is what. I ended up using a third wiring harness for just parts. This way, green w/red stripe is still that, etc.
a good used one wouldn't be bad as long as i knew it was good. Im just tired up bad conections and broken wires and all the other stuff you get with the hack job under my truck.
I purchased an EZ wire kit off ebay for 175 haven't used it yet so I cant tell ya how good it actually is but, it looks nice and they send ya plenty of instructions lol. I bought it just to see how it compaired to painless looks pretty good and over half the cost.
I could have used a decent used harness for my build, but I feel much better with new wiring than old wiring. Hate to stick 20K plus into a restoration and not replace the wiring with new stuff. I used the old harness for different ends and as a resource for my new one.
My roommate bought the EZ Kit on ebay for his 58 Ford car. It seems like they give you plenty of length and the fuze panel looks good but you will have to splice into your existing light ends or connectors. Or you will have to buy new ones to replace the old pieces.
The Centech seemed to have most everything you need to do the whole install but that is why you pay so much more for it. You can get a Painless kit but they are around $650-700.
You are also paying for the time that is required for making up the ends of the connectors. The centech isn't a plug and go type harness, but very close. You just have to run each "set" individual like the others, but it's made very easy.
