I will comment that the recall is ridiculous. I would only think that it would be fair to refund those (like myself) that have been charged $300 dollars to have one previously replaced at the dealership. I know I will never seee that money back, But for those of you who are mechanicaly inclined, why would you let a stealership touch your truck just to save 10 minutes and $25 on a CPS? i hear to much on hear of nightmares even when the dealership is doing just a simple oil change. The benefits do not outwiegh the cost.
I do understand that there are people out there with a busy schedule and not to mechanicaly inclined that cannot do the cps change themselves. My .02.

I have the 190.00 CPS from ford in my truck right now. Changed it last year. I have 2 of the 27.00 gray ones in my glove box. Like said above, I will take the lost and not let them touch my truck for this. If they see the exhaust and gauges, I'm sure the young man will take it for a test drive.
I agree, I wouldn't take my truck in to a dealership and risk them tweaking/damaging something else over a $25 part that I can change myself.
But, if I were one of the people who had previously paid big money to have a bad CPS changed out, you can be sure that I would be going after Ford for a refund. Seems like a pretty straightforward case to me.
Seems to me Ford played the game pretty good here. Too bad. They milked it for as much as they could, wait till the last minute, drop the price so everyone replaces them, then offer a recall to the three or four people that haven't had to change theirs.
So, I go to one of the local Ford dealerships and inquire about the recall. The service guy goes out and gets my VIN and runs it and says there is nothing showing for my truck. I found it odd as my '01 Excursion was built at the Kentucky plant and he says it may have already been done and that is why its not showing up??
So I run ,my VIN through the Ford site posted and sure enough, it says there is the recall for the CPS.... where do they get these guys from? Is there a High School program for those that don't match any other aptitude qualification to be a service advisor?
Thanx to this site, we don't have to be at the mercy of our Ford service reps....
Interestingly enough, I logged a complaint with the DOT about the CPS issue about a year ago and a DOT rep actually called me (much to my surprise) around 6 months later to ask me about my exact experiences with the CPS issue.
He indicated then that they were pressuring Ford into a voluntary recall (apparently much easier to do than a mandatory recall) but he did say that as it was considered a safety issue, they would persue a mandatory recall if Ford didn't do it voluntarily. Given the time frame, I am guessing that they did this voluntarily.
Thanks for the great link for recall. Mine qualifies, I haven't had any problems with it yet but I called the stealership and they are going to install the new one tomorrow morning.
Will update if they give me any hassle.
Curious that this recall comes right on the heels of Nissan just announcing one a week or two ago for their newer Altimas I believe it was? Nissan recall linky.
I haven't had to replace mine yet...but I still keep a spare in the glove box with the wrench for the change out.... Maybe I will take mine in to get it done...just for *****s and giggles.
I seriously doubt they'll let you keep it. Since the recall states a possible liability issue, I'm sure they want as many of those things back as they can. Doesn't hurt to ask, I guess.
On another note, I wonder what they'd say if I brought mine in with all these mods (after yanking the DP, of course!!).
Well, it's a recall, not a warrenty thing, I though that because it's a safty issue that they have to replace it. I'm bringing mine in the first week of january. If you haven't gone in by then I'll let you know if they say anything about mods.
Safe to assume I will not be able to get my refund of $690 when the dealership ripped me off when replacing mine!!! Sure wish I would have been around this site prior to bending over for them....
Just talked to FOMOCO customer care, I was instructed to bring in a copy of the work order where they swapped out my CPS and have the dealership apply for a refund, through FOMOCO. was told to also bring in reciept for towing as they will look at this to see if it qualifies for a refund.
There is hope, I will be going to the dealer tomorrow A.M. and having a chat with the service advisor. Will post results.
I have a F-250, 7.3....2001...
Where do I find the info on where and when my truck was made. My CPS went out in June and I bought a replacment from O'reilly Auto. I put the old one in the clove box because the truck would at least start when it 'Died'.... The one I bought in June cost me 150.00....It went out in OCT.....---Thanks to this web site, I found out that they 'only' cost 25.00 now----I got my full 150.00 back and then turned around and bought one for 25.00. The one that I bought for 25.00 was 'black' and I was told that it should have been 'gray'.Several times my truck has 'coughed' in the last two months. (Usually when it is raining). I know that the one in the glove box is 'shot', but at least it will start the truck (for now) and get me from point A to point B. 'If' I have an 'original' CPS, I will put it back in and let 'The Dealer' put in a new one....How do I verify that the one that I took off and put in the glove box was 'original....
