I have an 83 bronco with a 300 and I qo through about a quart of oil a week from the rear engine seal. Just wondering how big of a job it is to change-do I need to drop the tranny off or can I get it in without any major work. thanks for the help.
You have to pull the tranny and flexplate/flywheel. the Seal is a one piece and you don't have to take the oil pan off so that is a plus. you should be able to get the job done in about 3-5 hours...... did it in 90 minutes at the tech school autoshop with access to all the "neat" tools and truck lift/tranny jack
83' Ford Bronco, 6" of lift, 35x12.5x15" thornbirds, and a 230HP I6
84' Ford Bronco 2" DROPPED custom 2X4, Soon to be 460/500hp.
Thanx for the info; I have the same icky job coming up when I change trannies next fall.
Are any of these "neat" tools special to the rear main seal changeout?
If so, what are they?

I had a similar problem on a mitsubishi pick up. Go to the auto parts store and ask for something you put in the crankcase to "swell" the rear seal. This works after a week or two. It worked for me. Its worth a try, and if it dosent all you have lost is a couple of bucks.
Also, remember to check the part of the crank that the seal rides on. Excessive leakage and miles can lead to wear of the crank where the seal rides... any groove at all and you will no doubt be doing the job again! I believe NAPA sells a slip on collar to fix that problem.
