Ball missing in thermostat?

Ball missing in thermostat?
I have searched the forums and found lots of info on changing the thermostat. Only problem is I can't find the check ball everyone is talking about. My engine is a 86 6.9. What is the significance of the ball? Is it ok without it. It has apparently been removed by a previous owner. I see the hole were it is supposed to be, but no ball visible. Should it be at the top of the hole, or could it be disquised with the antifreeze, where i can't see it? need to put this thing back togerther, please help. By the way I did purchase the factory thermo from ford to go back in.
