Well, I've worked on it for a couple of months now, and my truck is almost ready for the road again ... BUT I have a major issue here.
The rad cradle from my 84/I6 is different than the 85/V8 one ... the newer one has a wider opening for the rad. I believe it's a 27" wide rad as opposed to the 21" rad that came out of my truck originally. Did ALL 85+ trucks move to the wider radiators, or is this a 6 vs. 8 issue. If all the 85's switched, it would be a simple matter of ordering an 85 rad ... if it's a 6 vs. 8 thing, am I FUBAR? The V8 rads are backwards to the 6's since the water pumps run in different directions. Any help would VERY MUCH be appreciated here! I want my truck back before the snow flies!

trucks with a/c have wider radiators. I have a 85 with 302 and a 86 with 300 both with air both have the same size radiator with different hose connections as you described.
The newer trucks have a wider rad opening and radiators with plastic tanks, and, yes, the change covered the whole line in 85.
So, a 1985 radiator should fix that problem.

Thanks guys! As always, you're lifesavers. The guy at the parts store was confused by the concept of rads with more than one width in these trucks. Cheers!
