I have a 78 with a 6 cylinder 1 barrel carter carb. Did a carb job 2 years ago and ever since I can remeber I have always noticed some gas evident on the outside of the carb. She floods real easy especially if the truck is shut off for approx. 10-20 min otherwise it does not flood. Can't locate where the carb might be leaking. Not a real big deal just that you can smell gas around the truck after you shut her off. Any suggestions, personally i think the old carter is worn and its time for a new one. What's your take?? And don't suggest a 4 barrel Holley, I like my 26.5 miles/gallon and thats no lie!
I had a Carter on an old six that used to flood intermitently. The float seemed to hang up. If I thumped the side of the carb with a small wrench, it would usually free up.
Take off the top of the carb and look the float over. The hinge/pin may be worn and binding up.
Hmm, sounds like the float is set a bit high, try adjusting the float a bit lower, it may fix it. 26.5MPG, I believe you, I remember getting 25 out of this truck, back before I started the crazyness.... I still pull 15 out of it, even with too much cam and a couple big iron gearboxes....

Thanx guys dropped float and truck doesn't flood when warm, the true test will be on cold morning starts. She bogs in the mornings so I put on a manual choke, that helped a little, but the truck still likes to bog(really temp. sensitive). Maybe by dropping the float she won't bog, won't cross my fingers this old girl has always had a mind of her own. Still cheaper than a 700.00 lease!!! And you know I can actually work on my vehicle.
