Carb Suggestion

I have a 68 F100 with 97k original miles on a 360. The truck runs pretty good at half choke. If I press the choke all the way in once the truck is warm there is quite a bit of hesitation in the acceleration. Once I shut the truck off, and wait about 15-45 minutes the truck will not crank. It is definitely flooding out. I can crank on the truck until the battery runs down. Do any of you have any suggestions on whether I should pick up a remanufactured two barrel, go to a four barrel, or try to rebuild the two barrel that I have? Thanks in advance for any information that you can provide.

Take care

Carb Suggestion

When you say the motor will not crank do you mean it seems like the battery is low?My 390 in a '76 f100 would do this when I had corrosion on the ground from the battery to the block. If I kept it cleaned off I didn't have a problem.I wouldn't think a bad carb would keep it from cranking over.If you swap to a 4bbl. carb you'll have to switch intakes too and this could get costly.Even though,I get better mileage from the Holley 600 and Edelbrock intake than I ever did with a new factory 2bbl.I know this may seem backwards with your question, but have you checked the fuel filters?Sometimes you can have a clog and need to run the choke to help the carb pull more gas but with the flap closed it doesn't get enuff air.Just a thought.

Carb Suggestion

Chris,

I have a 69 F-100 with the same motor that you have. I was having the same trouble out of my 2bbl carb. I bought a kit to rebuild it at autozone for 12.90, took it off, went thru it with a can of carb spray making sure that all the passages were clean, checked the float for leaks. I have never been happier with it. It only took about 2.5 hours to do and it starts and runs great with the factory 2bbl. I can't wait to check mileage with the rebuilt carb. This was a good investment of my money and cost me under 20 bucks.

I would consider putting an automatic choke kit on it. An auto choke will open gradually and give better driveability than you can get with a manual choke. Just my opinion.

Ditto on the electric choke. When I bought my 69 F100 with a 360, it started poorly and ran like hell. That first weekend I rebuilt the carb and replaced the manual choke with an electric one from Autozone. Total cost was less than 40 bucks, and she has started and run like a champ ever since, whether hot or cold, having sat for two weeks or just a few minutes.
