I've got a 1970 Econoline van with a I6 engine, I'm not real familiar with the Ford Truck 6s, can anyone please tell me how I can identify which engine I have, which may not be the original?
Thanks!! -Supercab
If it is the same as original, a 240 is engine code "A" a 300 is code "B" on your door post and in the VIN number. Other than the internal shape of the combustion chamber and the length of the stroke, I'm not sure there is a difference. Look under the edge of driverside front lip of the head casting and you will see a casting number, it should be D0A?-? for a 1970. (You will need an inspection mirror to do this) If the first 2 are D0 you at least know the head is from 1970. Then look at the block under the passenger side motor mount. There is a circle with 1,3,5,7,9 cast in it. There also is an arrow that should, in your case point between the 9 and 1. I know these casting marks are hard to see, but that should give you an idea of if the engine is the original or not. Actually IF you can read all 5 letters and digits of the number on the head, you can figure out if the head was cast for a 240 or a 300. Herman
