I know I've already posted this, but we HAVE to purchase a truck TODAY (my hubby's truck died Thursday, and he has to have one for work travel). Please help! We are about to (TODAY) purchase a new (to us) Ford Ranger supercab. We have narrowed the options down to two vehicles: one is a 97 Ranger supercab with V6/automatic transmission and 66,000 miles, the second is a 98 Ranger supercab with 4 cylinder/5 speed manual transmission and 65,000 miles. I do not know which option packages or whatever they have, except that the 97 has manual windows and locks and only an am/fm radio, and the 98 has power everything and a Kenwood am/fm cd. Can someone help me? I need performance comparison information for my husband. Thank you in advance!

I never had a late '90s ranger, but the '89 that I had w/the 4 cyl engine was a real dog. Poor thing could hardly keep up on the highway. (well, at 80 at least) So if you don't drive in high speed freeway traffic, go with the 4. Otherwise, I'd take base options and a v6 any day.
The 4 cyl is going to get better mileage than the V6. If he drives lots of miles but doesn't have to tow or haul anything heavy, then I'd opt for the 4 cyl. If there's any weight involved in his driving, then I'd go with the V6. Other things like stereos are easy to change later.
Are the trucks 4 wheel drive? If so, keep in mind that the '98 and above have a completley different type of front hub system than the '97 and earlier models. Also, in 1998 the Ranger front suspension was redesigend and improved and power rack-and-pinion steering was added. Those are the differences between the 1997 and 1998 models that I am aware of.
