I have a 04 F150 4x4 5.4,and would like to know if anyone out there has a problem with a term called wheel nibble which is a side to side or rotational oscillation of the steering wheel at 100km and higher .I have had the rack replaced ,the drive shaft rotated 180 degrees ,new tires with road force balance on them,no luck.Any info would be great, thanks smittydoes
Smitty, I had the same problem with my 04 SCAB. I bought it with 34,000 on it. I took it out to Montana from Wisconsin 2 months later. My arm damn near went numb from the shaking. I put BFG AT KO's on it after I got back and the nibble dissappeared!! I had the Ameri-Crap tires..I think they were the culprit.
Given that you said you have new tires and good balancing, I would take a look at the wheels. Also double check the new tires and make sure that you do not have a bad unit from the start.
I just bought a brand new set of Cooper Tires for my Mercury Sable. There was no steering wheel shake prior to purchasing the tires but there was a shake afterwards with the new tires above 65 mph. After two rotate and balance of the new tires in a one week period, I was finally able to convince the place I bought the tires from that one of the new tires had to be bad. They put another complete set of new tires on the car and the shake went away. Don't assume that just because the tires are new that they are ok.
Anything new can be defective, in the last 2 yrs I have had a bad new brake rotor, a bad new battery, a bad new refrigerator, and we're not even talking about several products that someone had replaced the old piece in the new box and returned it. And then awhile back bought a set of halogen headlights and after getting them home, discovered someone had put a set of reg new headlights in the box, presumably putting the halogens into a box that was not halogen marked. And then another trip to home depot to return a toilet wax ring that someone had taken the closet bolts out of. And it goes on and on... CHECK THE BOX! Tires have a manufacture date on them, and you could prob go into a tire store to buy a NEW set of tires, and they could be a couple of yrs old.
