Blend door motor

I have a problem with my ac being stuck and not going to heat. I had a test run on it at my local dealership and they said it was the blend door actuator and the blend door itself. They gave me a quote of approx. $850. I was wondering if anyone has ever had this problem, and if so any advice on how to do it myself. I hate to drop that much right at X-mas. Thanks.

This has a diagram and some details - do a search on blend door and you will get all kinds of stuff.

Yeah, you basically have to rip the entire dash apart. The $850 is almost all labor. Not sure what the parts costs, but if you have patience, some mechanical skill and a free weekend, I am sure you can do it yourself.

Hey Iboogeylot

here is what my broke self did at the time

had the blend door break in the middle of winter here in Co. and at the time couldn't afford the 1200$ to get it fixed so I checked if it was the actuator that was bad or something with the door.

In my case the piece where the door and actuator meet up had completely broke. what I ended up doing was called a scrap yard and bought the whole heater box not sure the name 70$ only it took it home cut it open and took the blend door out then I went in from under the passenger side dash cut a ok size piece of the plastic in a u shape and bent it back carefully (wide enough to get my hand and long enough to get a blend door in and out) I pulled the actuator out heck of a job but possible removed the old blend door. and installed the one from the scrap yard I did how ever end up trimming I slight bit off the end of the blend door to make it go in a bit easier. reinstalled the actuator checked it would open and close sure enough did screwed it back in place sealed the u shaped hole with a epoxy for plastic and have had no probs for 4 years now. i have to say not the easiest job in the world but it did work and well worth it less then 100$

Hope this May help
Dom

I think the blend door was about $30 at the stealership. A weekend is about right to do it. The helm manual was very valuble as it had you take things out in assemblies and so did not tear as much stuff apart.

You can take the motor out without taking it all apart and replace that to see if that will fix your problem. With the motor out, you can probably stick your finger up in the hole where the motor stem goes up in the heater box and feel if your door is broken. If it is, then you have to pull the dash to replace it, unless you want to cut a hole in your box as detailed above. When I did my sister's '99, I did not completely pull the dash. I left the myriad wires on the left side connected and just pulled the dash away from it's mounts on the right side and set it on the passenger seat. I then reached over the top to replace the door.
