NEED INFO:
I just replaced my 4.6 Engine in my 1999 Ford 150. The old one needed a new head etc. etc. so I found a brand new dynotested 2001 engine (4.6 also) and had it installed. It drove fine for the first 100 km then my "service engine soon" light came on. I've cleared the codes twice but it keeps coming back on. I called the shop that installed the new engine and they told me "not to worry about it" the computer is just learning the new engine settings and at my 1000 km oil change they'll clear the codes and check it over.
Does this sound right to anyone ???? What's the chance that this situation will correct itself ? I'm worried maybe the computers not compatible with the new engine etc. or that I'm going to damage something in the next 1000 kms before it's checked.
ANY ADVICE.
Go buy a OBD II dianostic code reader for your year truck. It is easy to use and will tell you what the check engine light is about. Autoxray makes a good unit and is well worth the money you spend. You can buy them at any local auto parts store for about $250. I have one and have already used it.
good luck
If I was the one that installed the engine and you called me with this information I would want you to come back in an let me check the codes and then tell you if it needed attenton now or later. Reading the codes is the only way you can know if it is harmful to the engine.
I took the truck to my local garage and they checked the codes !! It showing up that the Bank 1 UP sensor (o2 sensor) is reading lean. He did some further data flow readings and disconnected the bank 1 o2 sensor to isolate it and it "apparently" appears that there is little or no activity (volt wise) from that 02 sensor.
Says it's probably malfunctioning and neeeds replacing. I priced a new one and their $148.00 cnd. I sure hope that this IS the problem before I order a new one as it's very pricey if he's wrong. I did pull it out and try and clean it up + get the code off it for ordering a new one and it appears that it's "dented" on one side !! Perhaps they banged it when they dropped the new engine in. I"m wondering if hitting it hard enough to dent it could cause it to stop working ?????
Found the problem. When they installed the new engine they broke off one of the wires in the wiring harness to the 02 sensor...so of course it's not getting any readings and sending out a code to the computer. Took it back today and they are replacing the wiring harness.
Thanks, not that too many people responded to my call for help.
