Boost cutting out while towing under load

Hey guys, lately when pulling my 6500lb travel trailer, I'll sometimes hear a strange sound and the boost will drop off severely. It'll cut in and out, kind of like an engine missing. It generally only happens when under a heavy load like going up a hill when generating a lot of boost. The sound is hard to describe, kind of like a prop cavititating in the water.

Any thoughts? Turbo cutting out?

tnx,
TX

I would guess the veins are sticking, hopefully it hasnt been overboosting or you might be needing headgaskets.....

cleaning the turbo is a joke...

id get them to replace it if at all possible. also the egr while they are in there...

lastly its best to hope that the head gaskets go. then you might get a new set of heads and gaskets out of it. just arp stud the top end

good luck

Well, I'm 100+K miles and out of warranty, so any work is on my dime. I'm not cheap, but at the same time I don't want to get into hundreds (or possibly thousands) of $$ in work at a dealer. I'd rather do the work on it myself when possible.

First off it very well could be the turbo, mine had blown a thread bearing(atleast that's what Bean told me). If your out of warranty, find a solid performance shop to go to, get a set of headstuds done, and then mod what you want in there while they have the cab off. More then likely, they will just charge for the labor on the stud job, now would be the time to add extra stuff that you would want to add and all you'll be out is the cost of the part itself. Most of what you see in my siggy was done while they were doing the studs, and the stud labor was the only labor they had charged me for, that would be a good way to cut costs providing the performance place you went to didn't run their shop like a dealership(price wise that is). Just something to think about.
