I have noticed a strange turbo/wastegate noise when driving on level ground at 50 mph and under lite load with the boost gauge reading 3-5 lbs. The noise is the sound of the turbo spooling but then cuts out. This noise repeats 1-2 second interval. spools, nothing, spool, nothing etc. It sounds if the turbo is shuttering.
If i let completely off the throttle then the noise goes away. If i increase the throttle, then sound is of the turbo whistling in normal fashion.
Has anyone else heard this? What could be the cause. Anything to worry about?
Are you in regen when it does this?
My truck has "surges" when in regen but it's not bad enough to care much about.
For the most part, I can only hear the surges and see the gauges moving but strangely can't feel them.
It's still better than the 6.4L.
I notice small things so that's all it is, is something I notice.
I'll try to get a recording of my new turbo noise (not in regen) since I can't figure out how to explain it; to see if it's similar.
My problem is it may be too quiet for a camera to record.
The noise is somewhat muffled; as if it's under water.
This new noise I have only happens when the turbo is spooling down and coming to a stop though.
It didn't occur prior to 14,000 miles.
I don't believe that it's in regen when the noise occurs. How can I tell? Other than the noise, the truck drives and handles fine when this happens. Hell, this may be a normal occurrence as I usually have the stereo up and wouldn't be able to hear the turbo shuttering.
