I parked the truck after work yesterday and all seemed fine. Went to leave the house today, backed out of driveway ok , but when I put it in drive it died. Started again, put it in drive and died again. Started it again, gave it a few extra rpm's and got it to go forward but really chugged until speed came up a bit. As soon as I slowed down it started to chug and then died again.
I think the only reason I was able to go forward at all is because I was on snow.
It seems like I am stuck in 2nd or 3rd gear. Does this seem like a decent diagnosis of the problem? I do not have the means to check for codes until maybe Monday when a local shop would be open.
I had the same problem, kinda, after i got off the highway and was in od for a length of time, my transmission wouldnt downshift. So my truck died as soon as i got to a stop. Try to manually put it in first. if it goes foward my guess is TC, if it doesnt my need a rebuild.
Sorry I have not reported back. Last service was fluid change about 1200 miles ago.
I went out and shoveled ( about 6" ) and then fired up the ole truck again and everything worked as it should. Whats up with that?
Not to look a gift horse in the mouth but I do not trust problems that fix themselves. But for now I will take it as there is no place right now that I can do much work on it myself.
Thank you all for the input. Will keep you posted if it acts up again.
You have an 01 with the dreaded mechanical diode in the tranny if it shifts right on monday take it to a GOOD tranny shop and be prepared. Do not pass go, Do nto collect $200, go directly to tranny shop. It will get worse and soon will never shift out of second (or third )gear
I will need to pull what paperwork I found but the tranny was replaced once already. I believe sometime in '03 maybe. Cannot remember off the top of my head.

No, that doesn't seem reasonable. Being in 2nd or 3rd at a stop won't make the engine run any differently, and certainly won't make it stall. If it were in 2nd or 3rd all that would happen is that it would accelerate a lot slower. It wouldn't chug or otherwise run bad.
Your torque converter clutch stuck on for some reason. If you are low on trans fluid it can do this. So can several other things that won't fix themselves. Two other things that could cause it and could fix themselves is a sticking torque converter control solenoid, or a sticking torque converter control valve. If your fluid is full and it doesn't happen again I wouldn't do anything. If it happens again, then further diagnosis will have to be done.
