Today on my way home from work, i was going around 50 mph or so and i let off for a bit. The engine dropped down to about 1000 rpms, like usual but when i got back on it i had a grinding sound. I let off and got back into again and it did it again, tried another time and it didn't. I couldn't tell where it came from. All the fluids are good, everything was flushed about 2000 miles ago. Fairly new tranny. Everything on this truck is in excellent shape for 177,000 miles. It's a 1999 F350 4x4 7.3 auto
It sounds like your torque converter. It will get worse if this is the case and start making the noise really bad when sitting idle. The diesel torque converterss go out sooner than the gassers do because they have so much more torque that the vanes inside can't hold up.
thank you, silver. I will keep that in mind. That does make sense because i could rev on it like it was not in gear, Have you ever replaced one on a 4r1000
No mine is still holding in there (5.4L) but when I first got the truck my transmission mechanic wanted to check it out for me since he had changed so many of the local ambulance torque converters. He was the one who told me the diesel torque converters are prone to bite the dust and usually around 150,000-160,000 miles.
is your tranny still under warranty or did you not replace the TC then? Also be careful, i knwo that a tranny can crap out and trash the TC but i dont know if it can go vise versa, but if it does, you should have it looked at ASAP
maybe someone else can chime in on whether the TC can puke its contents into the tranny and junk it too

You are right, it can go both ways (contamination). A lot of places will not warranty a new transmission if you don't replace the torrque converter at the same time.
