i have been hesitant about saying anything as we all know how things can go topsy turvy , but...... i and twise just swapped vehicles . he's taking my everchanging , neverending 55 project as his own and i am now the proud owner of one 49 f-4 . cant wait to get it to the house and get started , and i cant wait to see what becomes of the 55 . it deserves to be finished and to be honest i have one screwed up work schedule and rarely have time just to do basic maintenance an the 53 nonetheless work at lenght . i do love the 55 but it and i seem to always be having issues so maybe our luck has changed . now to figure out how to get that big ol' f-4 home as i dont think she's gonna fit on norms trailer . oh and no fears the f-4 is gonna stay an f-4 . i think i'm gonna call it the big d { divorce } as i think my wife is a little mad . she want's me to get rid of stuff but i keep draggin it home lol !!!!!!!!!!!!! old fords never die they just clutter up your yard!!!! should have known better when she said i do , as i say i do to every ol car and truck i can afford at that time !!!
I like the F-4 for two reasons. First, it's a big truck without the big truck frame problems. The F-4 has the single layer frame so you won't have the rust trapped between the two layers. The F-4, while a big truck, is a little lighter because of the lighter frame. You should get a little better mileage than the F-5 and F-6. It's not rated for as heavy of a load but I doubt you will ever overload the truck, it's an old truck, not a heavy work truck any more.
Second, there were fewer F-4s built than the smaller and larger trucks because back then you either wanted a light truck to haul light loads, so you got a pickup, or you wanted to haul a heavy load, then you ordered a F-5 or bigger. The F-4 was kind of a waste of money so less were ordered.
Make sure you do a search for the "Widow Maker" wheels on the F-4. They have the same wheel trouble as the larger trucks.
I have hauled quite a few F-4,5,and 6s on standard car trailers. One trip was 400 miles, which I would never do again, but if you're hauling a short distance and take your time, and you have a good trailer, you shouldn't have any problems.
its only about a mile from my house to it and were gonna load the 55 on and take it over first so we might give it a try , but it isnt my trailer so its up to norm . oh and yeah in the world is a small place category , twise , norm and myself went to school together , dont remember but it was all a haze if ya know what i mean , and norm was twises bro in law . small world ! and yep i had the widow makers on a couple of ol' trucks including the 55 when it was still a one ton . that , after getting her moving under her own power will be one of the first things remedied . i think it was stockton wheel who made something called the powerwagon series 24 that was a 6 bolt replacement rim for the older trucks . i geuss i oughtta look 'em up and see if they got 'em in the right size or close . get her running and drive her to work whilst i beat on the 53 for awhile . she thinks i use to much fuel now hah ! she'll get over it . you know how the lady folks are they want a pretty house and ya got someone like me with ol' beat up trucks and sometimes cars well ...........
Stockton probably won't be able to help with the wheels for the F-4. They only sell reconditioned wheels, and only if they have them. You have to start looking for 20" wheels with the outer snap ring or 22 1/2" once piece, very rare, or 19 1/2" one piece, not as rare but still takes a lot of looking. The 19 1/2" were used on Dodge RVs back in the '70s and early '80s.
Do a search of this forum and you will find quite a few posts about the big wheels.
yep chimed in a few times on those posts my self . had a good freind have one of those things go awry at the tire store he was employed at . took off part of his cranium . i think norm knows where there's a early dodge motor home he was scoping out for the 440 so if im right i'll have him check the rims out . the info is appreciated .
I don't know what 55_F350 is talking about!!! I sold him that F4 for $15.000 with his 53 1 ton included and his American Bulldog to boot. Thats why he is going to have marriage problems. HaHa Just kidding ya Kevin. I am excited about getting the 55 also, looking forward to tackling a new project. Have fun.
funny twise let me know if ya get the pics . you definetely cannot have mallethead he's my buddy , and he's about as bright as me sometimes too ! what's really funny is my neighbors are broke . after / during also the first wifey i always had racecars old cars etc. sitting around here . they didnt like it but they've become accustomed to it . the only one who gets uptight is the now wife and we've been together a more than adequate amount of time she should be used to it ! i had one of my neighbors once ask me what i was going to do with this 78 cutlass with a rollcage in it . pretty obvious i thought , but being the smart a-- i am i told him iwas gonna put it on blocks in the front yard , put a whole in the roof for a birdbath . the granddaughters love grandpa's old trucks anyway so grandma's outvoted ! i cant wait to get them swapped so i can work on it , and see what you're gonna do with the 55 .
gonna call it the big d { divorce } as i think my wife is a little mad . she want's me to get rid of stuff but i keep draggin it home lol !!!!!!!!!!!!! old fords never die they just clutter up your yard!!!! should have known better when she said i do , as i say i do to every ol car and truck i can afford at that time !!!
Congrats on the swap!! It sounds like all parties made out nicely
I have to constantly remind my wife that its partly her fault.....
