'73 f100 4x4 rebuild kit manual steering box

Hi
I have more than an inch of play in my manual steering box. I could get a new one on summit or rockauto but was wondering if a rebuild kit is available or is it even worth rebuilding?

FoMoCo never offered a "rebuild" kit, all the parts were sold individually.

All the parts are now obsolete, some/all may be available NOS

Pic: 3552/3553 are the steering shaft bearing cups; 3571 are the bearings.

3576 is the sector shaft bushing, 3581 is the sector shaft gasket, 3591 is the seal.

But, a worn drag link and tie rods are another cause of loosey-goosey steering.

Does the truck have Power Assist P/S?

NumberDummy, yes. I have p/s assist which i just rebuilt. All tie rods are in great shape. I am putting new c bushings and radius arm bushings. But the problem is in the box.

Great diagram. I will use it. Thank you.

Pic: Garrison Power Assist P/S Control Valve.

The (2) 3304 are what FoMoCo refers to as draglinks, have ball joints that wear out causing play.

Did you replace one or both when you rebuilt the steering?

I should have been more clear to answer your question. I have steer play when engine is off and p/s assist not in use. I can rotate the steering shaft attached to the steering gear with my hand and get play from it. In other words the play is pre-pitman arm - in the steering gear.

Thanks. I will look into the parts for that gear. My question - what parts in the steering gear do you think wear out (i know it is a shot in the dark) but i am sure it is a common problem. The owner before me did not use p/s assist - truck had no steering pump attached and ram cylinder was pouring out the fluid.
