I need to rebuild our steering box onour 69 F250. The kits are fairly cheap, but we have never taken on rebuilding a steering box. Anyone know of a step by step paper or any help that we can get? It sure would beat buying a new box... Thanks in advance
Lonnie,
Have you taken this on yet?
I am in the middle of half a$$ ed rebuilding mine as you'll see if you keep reading.
I bought the rebuild kit and it has instructions inside with an exploded view of the steering box.
the print is stinking small and not all parts they talk about are labled in their drawing.
I don't know if yours is the same type steering box as mine.
but, assuming it is... removing the sector shaft and the worm gear asymbly(includes what looks like the rack part of rack and pinion, crossed with a piston) isn't that bad.
I have taken the rack/piston off of the worm gear(had to remove 27 little ***** to do that ) that wasn't even that bad. I stopped short of removing the worm gear shaft from the housing that the pump hoses fit to.
Re placing the dust shield and seals can be done from here. on the end of the worm gear (input shaft) I had to use an awl to punch a hole to pull these out (and then remove the snap ring to get to the seal)
the sector shaft had 2 seals, 2 metal washers, and a snap ring.
I had to stop last night ... mosquitos were eating us alive.
I hope this helps
Tony
Phew not sure I want the headack...my son has a 76 F250 that's not in as good of shape as the 69 so maybe the 76 box will fit and I'll be done...not sure which route I'll take yet... thanks for the info!!
