Here is the story. I collecting the parts for a super low budget Mass air EFI 5.0 H.O. swap for my bronco (currently with a '67 289) It is my understanding that the late 5.0 will use a 50oz (instead of 28oz) flywheel and harmonic balancer. I have also read that it is possible to have a machine shop balance the 28oz flywheel to "convert" it to a 50oz, so no problem there. but the harmonic balancer is a different story.
I am going to have to find a 50oz balancer, and the catch is, I would like to keep my '67 289 accesories, water pump and pullies. What vehicles should I be looking at in the junkyard for this balancer? It is my understanding that the early CS pulley will not bolt to say a 90's 5.0mustang. But what about vbelt equiped mid 80's trucks, cars, lincolns? Or can a machine shop balance the balancer when the balance the flywheel?
I would think you should be able to get a the right flywheel and balancer with no problem....
I have a balancer on my truck that can go either 28oz or 50oz and go 3 bolt or 4 bolt. I forget who makes it.....take a look in Summit....it was cheap....60.00 I think.
as far as lining up perfectly im not sure, but i do know that any 302 up to and including 1980 is 28oz.....81 started 50oz. and i believe the 351w was always 50oz. you could try any 81-85 f150's or cars that were still v-belt and not serpentene. cause it will be a 50oz harmonic balancer.
wheather or not they will all line up perfectly i cannot answer.......good luck
If the pulley flange offset on the balancer is the same as your 28 oz, you can just drill the 4 bolt holes in the three bolt pulley. I did one like that a couple years back. I think you only have to drill three of the holes. You can rebalance a 50 oz weight to 28, but I don't think it's possible the other way around. You'd have to add weight to get it to 50. 50 to 28, you just remove weight from the counterweight.
