I put on a Flowmaster cat-back system 3" pipes and could not really tell a difference in performance. But unless it is a significant difference I would not notice anyway. And the pipes from Flowmaster are thin and did not take long to rust through. I went back to regular stuff.

I had 2.5" straight pipe, no cat, and a single flowmaster 40 on my 85 and it sounded pretty good. It sounded like a nice lumpy small block at idle and was very quiet on the road at 70-75mph.
For what it's worth.

KEEP IT ON THE LEFT FOOT!
I just put a 70 series on a stock system and I didn't get the note I was hoping for. Volume-wise, it is just a little louder than stock. I think to get the note I'm after I'm going to need duals and possibly headers and I don't see doing that anytime soon. I haven't driven it enough yet to notice a significant difference in performance.

A 50 series is louder and if you want to be sure to get a nice exhaust note, the 40 series should do the trick--just the muffler in the stock piping. Then if you want it louder, scrapping the tailpipe and putting a short tailpipe out the side in front of the rear wheel should do the trick.
