IS the antenna not very good on the newer Broncos? I have poor reception could be the Sony Head Unit I had Alpine in my Ranger and much better reception. All other Fords I have owned had great FM reception even with Factory radio installed.
Not to say anything bad about Sony, but I had problems with one I had. Poor reception, skipping CD, etc... After it finally died, I put in a Panasonic. The difference was night and day.
However, I have never had any aftermarket radio get as good AM reception as a factory unit. Makes it very difficult to listen to the football games when I'm up in the hills hunting.
The reception wasn't very good with Factory CD Player either. I bought the Sony for $50 from a friend who wrecked his car or I would not have a Sony. I just thought it might be a little better than the Factory unit. My brothers Alpine picks up weak also. But our other cars pick up fine. Just wondering if there was anything to check on antenna to get better reception.
Most sound problems in aftermarket radios is caused by poorly designed RFI shielding. PM has a nice article on this in conjunction with an antenna fix:

The article also addresses other causes such as the in-tank fuel pump, fan moter, and a "sniffer" to search for the RFI noise source.
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 23-Nov-02 AT 02:59 PM (EST)]My 92 had the factory head in it when I bought it and the reception was lousy. I put a Pioneer CD into it and nothing changed. I have ALWAYS had Pioneer systems in all my cars. So I went digging and found that the connection at the base of the antennae to the cable was not only loose but the shielding had frayed leavning nothing but the actual antennae wire hanging from the base of the antennae. Bad situation, no, shielding was the main problem. Repaired the cable and didn't even have it connected to the antennae yet and the reception was 80% better than it had been. RF is a crazy little gremlin to control.
