I'm looking to put a bigger alternator on my '78 F150 4x4/L6 300 to power some off road lights, and eventually a winch and dual battery setup. What's the biggest baddest alternator I can bolt on to my L6, and who sells them?
I'm not 100% sure of the exact way to do it, but a single-wire (builtin regulartor) GM 140amp alternator is pretty cheap and can be mounted easily. I'm not sure of the pullies though. or just what you do with the rest of your existing charging system.
LAST EDITED ON 18-Oct-01 AT 12:58 PM (EST)[p]1990's ford trucks have a 130 amp alternator. It should be a plug in for you. If you use someone elses you will have to change wires and mounts. Here is the link to a 105 amp upgrade kit for the alternator you have. http://www.alternatorparts.com/HO-7013_kit_contents.htm Herman
The new alternators aren't the same as the old ones. At least the 3 plugs (iirc its 3, coulda been 2) on my '89F150 is different from the alternator on my '81 F100.
Then check out the upgrade kit in my earlier post. See it it will work. They give you a new stator (along with other things) that allow the alternator to produce more current. Herman
