I don't know if this questions belongs in this group but I'll start here anyways.
My 1987 F150 4x4 300 I6 power steering pump buzzes kind of loud, loud enough to hear inside the cab. It has fluid and seems to do it regardless of driving straight or turning. The pump looks like it bolts to the bracket assembly with just a couple of bolts. My Chiltons says to remove the pulley with a press and adapters.
Here's my questions:
If I were to try to replace the pump does anyone know how to get the pulley off (other than a press) and will the pump come out with the pulley on (it doesn't look like it will).
You do need a puller. It can be purchased at pep boys for about$40. it is the only thing that will remove the pulley without damaging or bending it. The pump won't come off the bracket without first removing the pulley. To put the pulley back on you need a bolt, nut and a washer. Ask around and you might find a neighbor who has one you can borrow!
Good luck!

The plastic FORD Pumps have the annoying tendency to get loud, especially when fluid is thinned out and dirty.
Flush out the old fluid and replace with Dexron III or Type F. Doesn't matter which, they're both hydraulic fluids. Just take off the return line and with someone behind the wheel to cycle the engine on and off keep pouring fluid into the pump reservoir until return line runs clean. This will flush out the entire system. replace hose to pump and top off. It may have quieted down with the oil change.
The only pump I had fail catastrophicly was on a 1978 Granada and it was a shaft failure (shifted fwd 1/2") and had to replace pump. Never had one fail due to noise. There are some replacement pumps that have the metal housing.....if your parts guy can cross reference to a metal pump housing so much the better.
Mine makes the same noise on my 94. Flushing the system will quiet it down but it still makes the noise. I just drive it till it needs a new one.

If you look in the Ford manual it says to use Type F transmission fluid. If you look at the dipstick it says use power steering fluid. Do Not use "power steering" fluid Do use ATF. The difference is in their lubricating properties and their afinity to water. Flush it good, It'll quiet down a lot. Herman
I just replaced the pump, lines and box sela on my dads 93 I six piece of cake with the pulller from autozone the only thing i had to do was buy a pece of thread rod to use for a shaft on the puller because the one that came with it wasnt long enough to thread all the way in. and the pump still howls with everything new? Does not bother me.
My experience with pumps over forty years has always been related to the wrong fluid being used.
Tip: Twice a year (Spring and Fall) do your maintenance, including sucking the old PS fluid out of the resevoir with a turkey baster, adding fresh. I haven't EVER had to change a pump since I started doing that.
