Power steering pulley size

My power sttering pump is leaking badly. Went to the parts store and got a new (rebuilt) one. Of course it doesn't come with the pulley or the pulley puller.

Two questions:

1. What is the diameter of the power steering pulley on a 1967 360? The one I have measures about 4 1/2 or 4 5/8 inches. The "extra" pulleys I have (later models) measure about 6 inches in diameter.

2. How do you get the puley off? I looked at the pulley on the leaking pump and it doesn't appear to have the grove for the puller I have. My puller is the type that has two 1/2 sleeves that fit around a groove on the pulley, an outer sleeve to hold them together on the pulley, and a bolt assembly to force the pulley off the shaft. Is there another style puller I should be using tor this pump/pulley combonation? (OOOPS - three q"S).

Thanks,

I'd like to open this topic up.
My power steering pulley seems to be close to 4.5" diameter. PS belt goes around crank (7 1/4" dia.) and fan/water pump pulley (6 5/8" dia.). Not sure if the pump is shot, but the power steering pump whines a lot.
I've increased my crank pulley from 6 5/6" to 7 1/4". Decreased fan/water from 7 1/4" to 6 5/8". Due to the increase in crank pulley obviously the PS pump spins faster. Can this be attributed to the whining or do I need a new pump? What set ups do you guys run?

Will provide more info on the topic...hope this will help a bit.

1972 Ford F100 2WD 390 FE w. AC/PS

  • C9TE-6312-A crank pulley 7 1/4" diameter 3 grove [two 3/8" belt grooves and one 1/2" belt grove farthest from the engine]
  • C8AE-8509-B water pump pulley 6 5/8" diameter 2 grove [two 3/8" belt grooves] Dampener face to water pump flange face is typical 2 3/8”
  • AC is add on with factory integral system (just like ones shown in LMC catalog) with two 1/2" groves. Idler pulley is roughly located on the passenger side of the engine (between alternator and center axis of the fan)
  • 55amp alternator with one 3/8" grove
  • Atsco Ford type pencil neck power steering pump
Seems like the proper set up would be run belts in the following order closest to the engine:
  • 1st 3/8" grove: crank+water pump+alternator
  • 2nd 3/8" grove: crank+water pump+power steering
  • 3rd 1/2" grove: carnk+idler pulley+AC

So now I have a problem with the steering pump pulley (unknown # [4 1/2" diameter]). I am running my PS belt around crank and water pump pulleys which take 3/8" belt, but my PS pulley seems to have wider groove and belt size and should work is around 53" length (cannot find v belts with that size). AutoZone tells me that I need a 55" long 3/8" belt, but in my case it is too long. I found a 54.5" long belt, but my tensioner is maxed out on a new belt...and this belt is bound to stretch. Will have to replace belts until find the right pulley.

Direction I am going with all the research is that I need a pulley that receives a 3/8" belt and is larger than what I have.

Found a resource Pulley showing most pulleys, but it does not refer to trucks and soooo many options.

Also whats up with March Performance V belt PS Pulley #502...anyone uses it with stock pulleys?

hope the NumberDummy can help me
