I have allways used Valvoline VR1 without any problems...But I also hear Shells Rotella T is also a real good source for (Zinc) Oil.. for cam break ins..
As Wes said zinc is needed for proper Cam and bearing break in....JMO

Hey Russ, You might want to investigate Shells Rotella T. The guys said that they have lowered the amount of zinc in the oil! Do to EPA....JMO
Yes! Some oils are lower in zinc or did away with them (also clogs the new cars cat after 50,000 miles or so). Chevy use to make some stuff called EOS. But they discontinued it. Comp, Crane and a few others make Brake-in Additive (zinc enriched). But Like I said do a little homework because there are a few oils that have the zinc and you won't need the additive! I would say 1,000ppm in zinc is good enough!
Well Wes I wasnt aware o that? Hmmmmm.. I do know that when I was Stupidvisor at Sam's club also running the Automotive dept, and the Truck Dept here...Well in Roanoke...I used to have Rattle motor Bulders come in and Have me order it by the drums.....For them....
Now I do know there are a hell of alot laxer EPA controls here in VA, than there are say in SoCal where I used to live.....and they all swore by it....But I have yet to do any reading up on it, in a year or 2....But I will check into it.....and "IF" its not the same product as they once had..or I cant get the stuff in my area....I'll just use the VR1 I have been using for 30 years then....

You Bet Russ! But if you are running a roller cam.....Then you don't have to worry about that! JMO
LOL.. Yeah this is true Wes....No need for break in on the rollers..... I might just go back with a Slightly lager Hyd bump stick in ol bue... and it will definitley be a good size roller in the big project motor.....Because it will only get driven on some good weekends and an occational blast at the track....
Aint nothing like the sound of a Screaming Lady and the Smell of Burning Rubber!! lol

Man........Your not kidding in this day and age Russ! I'm glade to see more younger people (younger then me LOL) are getting in this sport. Who knows what the future hold for us!
Yeah Wes so am I......Getting some of the Kids (I can say that at my age) LOL... out of the those Chop stick cars..and driving and actually being interested in some our old iron.... Make me feel all warm and fuzzy inside..LMAO!!
But I love it.....and I just hope they keep on coming in with there questions!

Something I just remembered .....was the fact if you ordered Rotella in the large 55 gal drums you could get the old CI-4 rated stuff with the higher zinc content. I'll look into it further.
I am interest in using the VR-1 when I break my engine in, but am looking for a recommendation on oil weight. Should I use 20W-50 or 10W-30 (if there is VR-1 in this weight)? Your thoughts are much appreciated.
