drive axle question

i've got an '86 ford f150 4x4. how do I know what kind of rear axle and how many splines without actually opening the differential and counting?

Is there a cover plate on the back of the differential? If so, it's an 8.8"

Ford used both 8.8 and 9" rears in 86. If it's a 9" its a 31 spline.......at least that's what is in my 86 F150 4x4.

If you look on the frame behind the driver's side door, there should be a tag that gives all sorts of useful info...

See below for most of the codes. My axle code was a 19 (not on the list) which turns out to be a "1983/86 Ford Rear Axle / 3.55-1 / Non Limited Slip / 3750 lb. Rear Axle Capacity" thanks to NumberDummy...

lol - no, I actually copied that from another guy's post. bd4martin was the guy who origionally posted it. Not sure if he typed all that in or not.
