How would i identify a dana 30 rear axle? I have one that has a big "30" cast into the pumpkin. Does that make it a dana 30? It has 8 lugs. Should i have any problems putting it in place of the factory sterling axle?

If I get it right, it sounds/reads like you are looking to replace your current 10.25 Sterling axle with one that you "believe" is a Dana 30 ? Is the Sterling locked up ? If you could, pics of both differentials would do wonders here. You could have not picked a better site for your inquiry but a little more info for clarification would be a big help.
Ford only used Dana 60/61 8 lug axles or the Ford/Sterling 8 lug axle for these year trucks. If you have a fill plug on the back cover, you have a Dana 60 if it's single rear wheel. If you have no fill plug in the rear cover, then you have a Ford/Sterling rearend already.
That's a semi-floater C-clip Dana 60 I believe. Ford used them in lighter duty F250 trucks in the 80s. My '84 originally had one of those but the axle shafts were shot from the bearings eating into them so I swapped in the Sterling. That axle will bolt right but it won't be as strong as a Sterling. They use smaller 1/2" wheel studs too so you'll be stuck with two different sizes of lug nuts. You may need to modify the driveshaft too because as I remember the length is different. Since your truck is a 4x4 you'll have to make sure it has the correct gear ratio as well.
Might be cheaper to try and find another sterling axle instead of swapping axles, as modifying driveshafts can get pretty expensive, if it is indeed a different enough length

You have 4x4 so you have to be careful what gear ratio you are swapping in place also. Look at the axle code on the door jamb on the driver's side and post that, we can tell you what ratio you have.
Like the others mentioned that axle you are looking at putting in is not as heavy duty as the one you had. If it's the correct ratio, it would get you going though.
The original axle; Did it chew up the spindle bad?(the snoot where the axle is coming out of).
