I've heard all kinds of pro and con stuff on bedliners so I need some advice.
I'll be doing light hauling with my 2007 F150. Moving yard stuff, junk, and flea market purchases - that's about it. Nothing real heavy. Neverthless the bed is getting scratched up.
Do I really need a bed liner? I've heard that a liner will trap moisture underneath it and promote rust. If I just continue to scratch up the paint, it's going to take 30 years for it to rust through, right?
Is it worth the investment from a mechanical standpoint or does it just look better than scratched paint???????
If you are going to get a bedliner I would recommend a spray in liner. I have a LineX and love it. Keeps the bed from looking bad from scratches, keeps it protected, don't have to worry about dropping heavy things in there, no moisture issues, etc. I have had a drop in before and didn't like it.
A plastic bedliner is great to absorb impact so you don't dent your box. However you will get wear marks in the paint where the bedliner touches the box. In terms of moisture causing rust ????. I had a plastic bedliner in my Sonoma for 15 years with no sign of rust...paint on floor of bed was worn, but no rust. I have a spray in liner called Line-x in the bed of my 06 FX4 and I use a factory bed mat. I haul mainly yard garbage and firewood. Any scuff marks have washed off so far and the bed mat absorbs any impact from me dropping firewood (still have to use caution around the wheel wells). There is some fading in the line-x but still looks awesome. The spray-ins are more expensive than the drop-ins, but they look so much better.
Ditto on the spray in liner. They are more expensive but well worth it. I would never own another truck without it being one of the first things i do to it. Line-X is an awesome product. Top of the line in spray in liners .
I love the Bed Rug, but I mostly haul boxed goods, cartons, crates, etc.
I've had bed rugs on my last 2 F-150s, and will have one on my next one, for sure. If I hauled more debris-type stuff, I might opt for either the line-X, or a simple rubber fitted mat. But for me, the Bed-Rug is tops!
Jus' to add...
If you would like to try out a liner but not dish out the crazy bux... you might want to look at the sprayed-in dealer back lots. Those guys that want to get the sprayed-ins are usually leaving the hard liners at the dealer.
True it maybe a bit beat-up (if its not from a Brand new truck)... but who would really see it for a "test-drive" of the liner.
I bought my truck w/a drop in liner... Everything slides around in the back at the slightest turn or deceleration. On the other hand, My 04 SCrew is nearly as nice as the day it left the lot. I cut/haul firewood and load the bed with many loads every year. Heavy abuse is where the drop-ins rule. spray-ons are great, and probably better in your case, but will come with a cost.
My ranger had a rubber mat in the bed. It was nice, too. Non-slip, easy removal for cleaning, but didn't protect sides. I would like to get a rubber mat to lay on my liner.
Installed a DualLiner in our 05 S/C in July this year. Not to be confused with DuraLiner. The Dual Liner is a 5-piece set that is shipped to you & you install yourself. The best part about this liner is the floor piece. It’s RUBBER!! No cargo sliding & easy on the knees. The floor piece is held down by the sidewall channels & is removable. I bought it direct for $325, shipping included.
I too had a drop in on my 91 Chevy. Cargo slid all the time & it was very hard on the knees. I had a topper on the 91 & have one on this truck. I’m in the bed all the time. Being easy on the knees is important to me.
Spray in’s are great but since I’m in the bed a lot on my knees, I chose the DualLiner.

good luck -jim
agreed... i've thrown firewood in mine without thinking twice about it..
the spray in ones are very nice but i don't think i'd like having to remove/replace one. my drop in bedliner + a roll up bed cover were 150 bucks total off craigslist... a spray in alone will cost more than that...

For what you want to do a spray in Bed liner is perfect. Now of course if you are going to be lobbing heavy objects (like firewood) towards your bed, a spray in bed liner will not protect it from that.
I have a LineX Spray in bedliner and a rubber mat. I thought that I could get by with just the rubber mat, but I ended up getting the LineX done about 9 months after buying the truck. I don't haul anything damaging in my box so my main reason for getting the Spray in Bedliner was for Scratch & rust protection more than anything. Having owned used trucks that had spray in bedliners, I couldn't stand looking at a scratched up box in my First brand new truck.
So for what you want, I would get LineX. I may be overkill for what you will do with your Box, but you will be happy in the long run. I am!
I like the spray in and would recomend it over the drop in any day. Do your own research at your local shops on what types are available and see what you like. The Line-X are nice so are the Rhino. They are both very different. I would take a look at a few different ones and get the one that fits you best.
I had my dealer spray in a bedliner -supposedly a authorised line-x shop. I had them match my factory paint. When I got the truck back, even after a few day I could peel the liner off with my fingernail. I brought the truck back and they removed and re-sprayed the bed. Now it is ok.
My big problem with a color matched spray in is that it still scratches. Its a nice finish but you can still see the wear -not what I was expecting. i will be getting and f-150 mat for $68 to protect my spray in
I have the factory plastic liner then got a rubber mat for free. It works very well. My only concern would be rust from the bedliner scraping but it should not happen for awhile(Probably have a spray in liner by then). Some people never have rust from them and some people get them right away. So it is hit or miss.
I love line-x though. We have it in all our other trucks. I want one, but I am just in a cheap mood right now.
