ATF has been used in the ZF's for awhile, some of the newer ZF's include transmission cooling lines similar to the automatic transmission cooler. It flows better to all the bearings than the heavier fluid, and somewhere here someone mentioned that the ZF has all ball bearings and none of the bushing/bearings. On the down side you have to change the fluid a little more often than you would in the old NP435 and T-18's. Come to think of it most of the agricultural tractors run hydralic fluid in the transmissions as a lubricant as well as operation of hydralics on equipment, it is only different from ATF by not having friction modifier in it.
