NP435 Swap

Ok, I got a 69 bronco that I want to make a 4 speed. I picked up a NP435 but I don't know if it'll work or not. I'm not sure what the tranny is out of. It has threads on the end of the output shaft, I figure for a yoke. It also has the square bolt pattern. My question is can this output shaft be used with the Dana 20. Also is there another way to adapt the tranny and transfercase without spending $300 on an adapter? Thanks

That Np435 what did you get it out of? If you got it off a 4wd truck i am pretty shure you cannot use it. The trans has to be off a 2wd truck. The output shaft you have will not fit you will have to buy one.

The 435 that will work needs to have the 28 spline output shaft.
Here is a partial list of available donors:
65-85 F series 2wd's
67-75 F100 4wd with Dana 21 single speed transfer case
Some 65- mid 70's with divorced style transfer cases (rare).

Keep in mind that you can use the 4wd transmission, but you will need to swap the output shaft for a 2wd, 28 spline shaft. Most likely, if you have threads on the output shaft, it is the proper trans. But, there is a HD output shaft that looks the same, but has a 32 spline output, so double check.

If you can get a 6 cylinder Bronco intermediate housing, they make a plate that will adapt it to the 4 speed. I believe they run about $175, but with the 6 cyl adaptor, it ends up being only about $20 cheaper than the regular adaptors out there. I can get you the adaptor plate and a 6 cyl adaptor if you want it.

I've also seen some homemade versions. But I caution that if you don't have access to a good machine shop and have the know how to cut it, make the adaptor, jig it to fit perfectly straight, and weld it strong enough to hold; its best left to the professionals. If you get the measurements or the angle between them off even slightly, it will cause problems, possibly even transmission or transfer case failure. I did a 4 speed in one a while back. The guy had bought an adaptor off of Ebay. From square one, I didn't feel comfortable with the install. When I went to install the transfer case onto the adaptor, it wouldn't go. With the angle of the transmission flange and the original T case adaptor being off, it put the trans output shaft at an angle in the adaptor. If I could have made them go together, it would have worn the trans output bearing and the transfer case pocket bearings out very quickly.
