Own a '92 4x4 with 4.9l EFI, have run Mobil 1 5w30 since day one. 130k miles and still runs like new. Change every 3500 miles. No leaks!
Ford recently announced that 5w30 is now recommended for ALL Ford gasoline engines.
Also using Mobil 1 5w30 in '98 Explorer 4.0 SOHC.
For a new vehicle, can't beat the synthetic. However, for a used vehicle, it would make sense to stick with what it has always used. For non-synthetic, I would recommend Quaker State 5 or 10w30. Change every 3000 miles. Used QS in my '86 Ranger and it went 200K miles.
Good luck!
For the last year and a half, I have been running Mobel 1 15W50 fully synthetic oil in my 1981 300. Before I started running this oil, I had already replaced my oil pan gasket, valve cover gasket, and pushrod cover gasket. I would only recomend synthetic oil for a vehicle that does not leak any oil, or burn any oil, because Mobel 1 15W50 is not cheap!!
How many miles since last major overhaul? If you have less than 30,000 and no leaks, go with mobile 1 and stay with it. 3500 miles between changes is a bit excessive. Mobile 1 does not break down like regular oil. Change the oil filter every 3000-5000 miles and change the oil every second filter change. 86 Bronco, 352,000 miles and counting. (never been apart) Still doesn't use a full quart between 5,000 mile filter changes. If you use regular oil, change it with the filter every time. Regular oil does break down. Just rebuilt a 66 F100, 300 incher with 268,000 miles (was my Dad's truck) Am using Delo 400 (30W) for breakin oil. Then it goes back to Mobile 1. Herman
