hello everyone. ive got a 2001 explorer sport with 60,000 mi. just recently maybe 3 months ago i had new rear calipers put on and rotors cut. in the past couple weeks i noticed something quite scary actually. in dry weather and only occaisonally when i apply the brakes and am about to come to a stop. the brake pedal "chatters" for a second or two like the abs is on and it takes a second for the truck to come to a complete stop. the abs light does not come on when this happens. im wondering if anyone has had a problem like this or knows the problem. it doesnt happen everytime but ive almost ran over my Sportster when parking behind it. scared the hell outta me. thanks
when you say you pulled the abvs fuse and are fine now, do you mean ive just blown a fuse? im confused. sorry, im not a technician so im not to sure about more technical stuff. thanks
The abs works like this: Each wheel has a toothed ring and sensor each of 4 sensors goes to the abs computer. If say each wheel is spinning at say 20rpm and the left front goes to 5 rpm the computer is figureing that its locking so its gonna free it up. The reason why it see's a locked up situation without actually haveing one is the teeth on the ring are rusted or a sensor is bad falsley indicating a locked wheel. In my situation we just took out the abs fuse so it won't release the brakes..
oh i see now. thanks for clearing up. im assuming its best to replace the sensor than to just remove the fuse. anyone have pics of what this sensor looks like? and how much a new one would go for? id appreciate it. for the time being would you suggest i remove the fuse? thanks again
if you disconnect one sensor, the light comes on, and the system stops working. pull the plug on one of the front sensors and see if the problems stops, or is something else.
Before spending $130 for a front sensor (or anything else), I just fixed this very problem yesterday. I replaced the rear and front sensors with no luck. I bought new pads and, while installing them, cleaned rust off everything around the calipers, disk shield, and reseated the sensors (after cleaning the metal they're seated on). I also applied the grease that lubricates the sensor's seal.
