2003 F250 brake problem

Ok, i need to get this figured out before i just bring it to the dealer (which i might do anyways)

On the truck in my sig, i am having a weird brake problem that feels like ABS coming on. The only time it happens is when i am just about at a complete stop, maybe going 3 mph at this point, and the brake pedal pulses and drops, truck shakes and the wheel jerks hard to the right. If i keep pushing the pedal it will go away and stop fine, or if i let off and then brake again it will stop fine. It feels exactly like ABS coming on, but only for a split second and it keeps doing it on dry pavement. Happens maybe 2 out of 5 stops. Already checked my brake fluid, just replaced the slide pins (didnt fix anything)

Also have a very loud squeal that seems to pulse on and off (and faster with more speed) only on right turns. fairly positive that is in the brakes, but not sure if it is related??

Thanks for any ideas

POSSIBLE ABS ACTIVATION

If you think the ABS is activating as you come to a stop, you need to hook up a scanner capable of reading wheel speeds, and look very closely at all 4 speeds---more than likely, one of them is dropping out at slow speed, usually indicating a bad wheel speed sensor.

So i would need to use something like AE? What do you mean is dropping out at low speed? the sensor? and how in depth is replacing the wheel speed sensor

POSSIBLE ABS ACTIVATION

I don't know what AE is. It is possible that one of your front ABS sensors is going bad, and at low speeds, the output voltage is too low for the ABS controller to read. 1 small bolt holds the sensor in, but sometimes the sensors rust into whatever they're bolted to and they break when you try and remove them. They are made of plastic. When you figure out if it's a sensor, load up the area with penetrating oil and let it soak in well--Hopefully that will reduce the chance of it breaking when trying to remove it.

AE = Auto Enginuity.. computer scan program, good friend of mine has it

Oh ok so the wheel sensor/abs sensor is the same thing? We just need to monitor what all 4 are saying and find the one that is reading low?

Do i need to replace the sensors in pairs? I found the sensor for 4x4 on rock auto... looks like $120 and it appears you get the whole wiring setup deal

The truck has three sensors, but Rongold is right that one of the sensors is dropping out at the end of the stop, probably the left front. You do not have to replace both side at the same time.

You could try to remove the sensor from the hub and clean it, but some have broken old cruddy sensors doing that. I don't believe AE has the capability of observing the ABS, so you may have to figure out if you want to spend the ~$180 for Ford to diagnose which sensor it is, (then change you for a sensor and it's replacement if you have them do it at about another $300), or take your chances. Me, I'd take my chances doing the left side first. If you can get the sensor out without damaging it, then you could also flip the new one to the right side and put the left one back in if that is not correct.

Also note that some people who have had bad sensor problems later on have a hub failure. It's not a given, but a bad hub will take out a sensor.

They DO NOT have to be replaced in pairs, and I see Dorman 4wd front ABS sensors for $48 on Rock Auto.

Alright thanks for the info. One of my friends said I can unplug the sensor and measure the voltage with a multimeter? Will that work as a test? If not I guess ill just order a sensor and give it a shot. I only see one for 4x4 so I'm guessing left and right share the same parts

Check the inside of the rotors for unusual wear. Siezed rotor slide pins can cause similar symptoms and the tattle-tale is uneven rotor wear between inside and outside.

I was thinking about just replacing the front rotors just because the squeal is really irritating me and i think that might be the problem. Just replaced the slide pins last night with the updated ones (even though i think i had the updated ones already) and they werent seized, but i went through with it anyways. Noise was still there

Going out to get readings from the wheel sensors soon

Forgot about the squeal. You might want to check under the truck and look to see if the parking brake hold down nails are still showing in the rear backing plates and have not pulled though rusting plates. These would be 1/4" pin heads in front of the axle at 90°.

I'm pretty sure its the front, already had the rear parking brake backing plates and all that replaced at the dealer a year ago
