Question Shiftin gears and the engine stops.

The other day I downshifted manually to 2nd and when I returned to drive the engine stops, I stop the truck, start again and all was fine. And other couple of times (different day), when the engine was in idle, when I shift from park to drive, there were no throtlle response, no power, but the truck move a little idleing, I change to neutral and again to drive and it works fine. Whats the deal?

Thanks in advance por any advice.

Im no auto tranny guy but have you checked the tranny fluid levels? How long since your last oil and filter change? Any check engine lights saying the tranny is going out?

Also it could be the torque converter acting up...... dont mark my words I'm just throwing out ideas

sounds like something is sticking with the no go in gear, as for the stalling, thats a good one if the truck was still moving. the converter clutch can stick and stall the truck but i've only had that happen when you come to a stop

When you said there was no throttle response do you mean like the the engine didn't rev at all or it just reved slow? This sounds like a ver strange problem!! Let hope it just goes away!

Red face

Sorry to the late update, but I was out of town and no internet services.<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-comfficeffice" /><o></o>

<o> </o>

ForemanES; The tranny fluid levels are fine. The oil and filter was changed about 1000 miles ago. Not any engine lights. It doesn’t seem that the torque converter is acting up.<o></o>

cOOn, the first time it happened, I downshift a gear (drive to 2nd) to slowdown the truck to pass a bump, and after shifting again to drive, the engine stalled and the battery light come in the dash, but the truck continued going forward slowly till I stopped with the break, after that I shift to park, start the engine, and that was it, after that runs fine. <o></o>

<o> </o>

tjbegss, When I said there was no throttle response I meant that the engine reved at normal idle and not acceleration at all when I push the pedal to the floor, and the truck was forward slowly only with idle, then I stop again (truck idleing) change from drive to neutral or park and again to drive and it worked fine, this happened in 2-3 occasions and in that occasions not any dash light (battery, CEL) and non light flashing in the OD switch (and the light is working). <o></o>

<o> </o>

I thought that maybe a wire lose or something else in the steering column could be the culprit, what do you think? <o></o>

<o> </o>

Thanks to all of you for your help.<o></o>

<o></o>

What about this?

1996-97 PowerStroke Stalling intermittently after a long deceleration in manual first or second gear in automatic trucks, or in low gears with ZF 5-speed, when shifting back up into a higher gear or depressing the clutch may be corrected by: performing electronic engine control diagnostics; replacing the oil with the recommened SAE weight for the ambient temp (see my <A href="http://intellidog.com/dieselmann/powers~1.htm">PowerStroke Page) and API rating; replacing the Injection Control Pressure sensor (ICP, P/N F6TZ-9F838-A) with one that has a date code of 6318 or higher ("C916318A" 6=1996, 318= Julian date Nov. 15); and adding a pint of Lubrizol 888 or Fleetrite CH1824392.
Note: California vehicles with E4OD automatics need to have the calibration of their powertrain computer updated as per TSB # 98-4-14.
Similar condition:
If you have a customer that drives in low gear at idle speed for an extended time then experiences a stall when depressing the clutch, instruct the customer to drive in low range when this condition normally would occur. The stall is most probably caused by the PCM seeing the accelerator pedal in the idle position (IVS "OFF") and a load on the engine and adapts to this mode. Depressing the clutch suddenly removes the load, the PCM over-compensates, and the engine stalls. There is no repair for this condition Stall when engaging transmission (automatic, usually manual low or reverse):
Torque Converter Clutch.
This may be caused by the TCC being engaged at idle. On trucks built before 9-20-95 the correction is a new transmission front pump and/or torque converter. On trucks built after the above date, it could be cause by a loose transmission filter. In this case, install a flat magnetic strip (from a Tempo ATX or Ranger A4LD transmission) in the trans pan below the filter pick up to retain the filter in place or use an updated filter from Ford that has bumps cast into the plastic to help it stay in place.

i'm not going to much help other than throwing educated guesses at you on this one. i have never run into this problem before. the above tsb doesnt really aplly to your issue, other then the icp sensor part, i'd say check your part number and see if it falls into the criteria. have you tried to scan it for codes? there may be something stored after all that.

as for the no accell in gear? i'm lost, there must be an ipen circuit otherwise there would be a code because the ivs and app would be off key with the rest of the engine.
the only wire that i can think of off the top of my head to cause that normally blows a fuse, but check it anyway. your overdrive cancel button, inspect the wires that run on top of the column, especially where they meet the shifter bast at the column top

its a good tsb to check on, while its not likely there is always a chance the previous owner never had the issue and now the origonal icp is acting up. i have seen much weirder things happen. a good find

It should only take a few minutes, some shops will do it for free, others may charge $5 - $10 or so
