Turbo Wheel ?

Hi all,
I'm doing a bunch of the 'little' mods right now, 6637,oil change,CCV, blah blah blah, anyhow, couple of questions.
1:The vac nipple broke off of my WG actuator and the stealer doesn't have one in stock, is there a better option than stock that I should order to replace it? Also, what's holding it on?

2:There's all kinds of black around the boot going into the intake manifold on the drivers side, am I correct in thinking I've got a leak there somewhere?

3:One of the vanes on my turbo has 2 small chips in it, the rest of them look good, should I replace the wheel because of these chips? Should I post pics of the chips or is any chips too big?

4:what weight oil do you guys run in colder weather?

Sorry, I fooled you, there's more than just one question!

1- there is 2 nuts on the back side of the booster..take the 2 nuts off and the booster comes off of the turbo..a C clip holds the rod at the other end..you can get a stronger booster from our sponsors..may even be less money..doesnt matter what one you use..its hard on a turbo after 25 lb anyways..
2-the black is oil..yes there could be a small leak there..if the clamps wont tighten any more..you need to pull the spider to get that boot off..build a leak detector for less then 20 bucks at low's and test the system first..it could save you alot of trouble..
3- if the wheel is not too dusted you should be ok..a picture would be better for an answer on that though..

4-i run delo 15/40 year round..never had any trouble.

I'll try door number 2:
Black around the boot? Are you talking about greasy black dirt at the boot connection at the valve cover plenum, or black soot at the pipe going into the back of the turbo? If it is the boot, it could indicate a leak, but it might just be oil seepage in the system. It's easy to tighten and check if it's a leak. If it is seepage, then your CCV mod will help clean things up. If it's the turbo inlet then you have an up-pipe leak = no fun. Will need to replace up-pipe. Might as well do both, preferably with bellowed pipes.

Why not try door number 3 as well...
Chips are not good simply do to the rotational velocity of the turbo. The imbalance will ultimately wipe out the bearing. That asside the chips will not help with making boost. I've got a used, but good, stock wheel in my shop if you need one.

Thanks For your help guys, now I have a couple more questions.

Could someone please tell me how big diameter is your 6637? Mine is a little over 8" and there is no frickin way it's going to fit, it's not even close to fitting under the hood. I looked at f 250's gallery and mine is nowhere near being capable of fitting like that. Is there a way to remove the lower box?

The oil is definitely coming from the red boot going to the intake manifold. I tightened the clamps some more and I'll have to find a way to clean it up and see if that'll work. I will also make a leak detector too.

Thanks for the offer on the wheel but I'll probably order a WW since everyone seems to like them and if I have to go to the trouble of removing the turbo might as well go all the way.

One last thing, am I OK to drive without the wastegate till one gets here? My truck runs a tad better right now.

not sure on the size of the 6637..but i do know the lower box needs to come out..under the battery there should be 2 bolts then 2 on the inner fenderwell..

a leak detector is the best way to go..just listen for a air leak that hisses like a tire going flat..

yes you can run with red line un hooked..but plug the red line useing the stud on the driver side boot clamp ..it will spool faster and spool up to 30 to 32 psi..its kind of hard on the turbo..if you dont have gauges dont hold WOT for too long...

OK, I guess I was missing the part about removing the lower box. So I need to remove the battery, 2 bolts under it and the 2 inside the filter box? I couldn't see where the box was seperate from the battery box that's why I didn't remove it.

I will defnitely be ordering gauges this week, I'm real tired already of not knowing what is happening.

i have the early 99 my air box was one piece..if i was to use the the 6637 i would cut around the battery so it has a tray to sit in...all 4 bolts are inside the box

SO the BAttery box will remain?

No, no exhaust yet, but that's coming soon. I haven't made my final decision yet, I'm still kicking it around, I'll probably get the 5" from MKO. That's where I'm leaning.

Is there an easier way to change the oil filter? I'm thinking of poking a hole in it next time!

Yea the battery box and lower tray will stay. take out the stock air filter and there will be bolts in the bottom of the air box . the whole air box comes out leaving just a small tray.

the bottom of my filter box is still there I just removed the box it self.

I just poke a hole in mine with a screwdriver and let it drain easy way of doing it.

gunnertom has the same truck as you..sounds like there is a air box with a cover that needs to come out..the battery try is separate.. sorry about that..mine was one unit..
for the filter.. I use my cheap Wally world cordless drill with a 1/4 inch bit.. and i drill a hole in the side of the filter.. right at the very bottom ... i drill at a downward angle.. this keeps the oil from running down the drill bit..carefull poking holes..you can break the filter head pretty quick..

Alright, here's some pics.
First, the wheel;

The oil leak;

My Zoodad mod, I super glued some fiberglass window screen over the hole but forgot to take pics of that;

Now I can't wait to get my filter on!
I went out tonight and bought the stuff for leak test too.

By the way, while I'm kicking the exhaust system around, would it do me any good to kick my muffler out and put a straight pipe in?
