i will guess two heavy guys or about 400# would be o.k. if you concentrate the load at the center of the gate, outer edge, you miy put a bend in it. if you are spreading the load out or loading at the left and right sides by the cables, then you are in much better shape. lalying a 5 ft long 2 x 12 side to side under the load might help... what you hauling?
i know that i have put at least 500 pounds on my tailgate, but that was when i worked for a cemetary. me and the boss had to deliver a headstone to another cemetary.

my 715# Harley, plus my 235# when I ride it up into the bed - so, 950#, or so. I thought about removing the tailgate whenever I carry my bike (it's a long bed).... or a second (and not as good) idea is to get a small trailer.
Yeah it is a lot. I've easily had 700lbs on mine. The weakest point in them as I have seen is the actual hinges, I've bent them a time or two just barely backing into stuff. IIRC the hinge on the D. side is the one that moves the easiest.
I know I put a Pontiac 400 long block with alt. starter, headers on it and it closes fine, that had to be 850++. Of course that ain't got nuttin on that ol Sal... I mean gal.

Yup...I've had a Chevy 350 with a transmission hooked to it sitting on my tailgate before. Not to mention my ATV's when I load them. 650lb and a 400lb ATV, plus me on them (220lbs).
I'd hope the Ford would have a rating at least as high as the Dodge Dakota... I loaded a buddy's bike in his bed a week ago. he has the short bed so the rear tire sat at the back edge of the bed for a 4 hour drive. of course his Yamaha is about 100 lbs lighter than my bike... but still...............
maybe I'll just try it, and if it bends the tailgate... then I'll know.
