I am having a hard time finding a used fly wheel for 78 f-150 with a 400. How hard is it to replace ring gear. And is it dependable. It seems to me to be ALOT cheaper to buy just the ring and replace it. What steps am I going to have to go through.
you can buy a remanufactured one thru your local major brand parts house for around $70 or so. OR, if you want, I can sell you one I am tired of looking at. I stopped using it because I put a 460 in. Shippnig is expensive, I would try to find it local first.
You can just flip the ring around, it'll work like new. Just get a torch and heat the ring up, hammer it off and flip it, get it set most of the way, heat it up and hammer it back on... hit it square, don't glance off the edge... get a big dull cold chisel if you need to.
The ring is very easy to replace. Knock the old one off with a chisel and a hammer. Work around the perimeter so that you knock if off evenly. I then put the flywheel in a freezer and the ring in my oven at 400 degrees. When the ring is hot, Lay it over the flywheel and knock it on evenly. P.S. Make sure your wife isn't home when you put the ring in the oven.....it gets kind of stink. I would be hesitant to heat the ring gear with a torch because it would be too easy to remove some of the tempering.

I am going from an automatic to a 4 speed so all that I have found is woreout ring gears on flywheels. And since a new flywheel is avg. 150$ and new ring gear avg 26$
MAN, Ford parts are expensive. Thanks for the info. It probably would work best if I found an original flywheel in junkyard to put NOS ring gear on. Is the flywheel for the 400 15 and sum odd inches in dia.?
go to lmctruck.com to find the ringear for about 20.00 bucks they also have an extensive list of other hard to find parts i have used them and find they are a little cheaper than even local parts stores
Any parts store should have a ring gear. I used to do these all the time when I worked in parts. We used to charge $25 to replace the ring gear, but that was a few years ago.
