Can anyone offer assistance on a flywheel issue I have. I'm puting a 302 in a 1960 f100 and I have a fly wheel that has the teeth worn off. I have counted twice 163 teeth. I can only find a replacement one that has 164 teeth. My f100 is 3 on the tree. Can anyone tell me where I can find a fly wheel ring of 163 teeth, or maybe how can I match starter bendix to fit this,if how do I go about this? Thanks for any feed back.
Except for the Mustang II, all the 302's I'm aware of came with either 157 or 164 teeth on the flywheel. I'm guessing perhaps you forgot to count the tooth your finger was on marking your beginning spot. Twice. Beyond that, I'm not sure what else to say, except the 164 tooth flywheel should work fine as a replacement, assumiing your transmission bellhousing is designed to use the 164 tooth flywheel. You didn't say what flywheel it's supposed to have.
You can buy just the ring gear and "sweat" it onto the flywheel. Just cut the old one off. Throw the flywheel in the freezer for awhile, and heat up the ring gear a bit. It saves a little money doing it this way. 157 and 164 teeth for the 302, the odd duck being the 168 tooth "special" I think. (bigger diameter, and could be only for the 289)
EDIT: I believe the 168 can be replaced by the 164.
I can't say this is all FACT, but could be MY FACTS.
I would have to jump on 52 mercs reply and agree that those are the only two that I know of for a 302. That is just what i think i know though. There is some ex ford parts experts on here that can tell you for sure and give you production dates and what color they need to be. Someone can produce the facts. Good luck
Thanks for the info everyone.whoever said that I might have miss counted, well I did. I do have 164 teeth on the flywheel. However I have another problem.I'm tod that all parts, flywheel crank, pulleys all have to match either 28oz or 50 oz.I have a pulley with ser #C7oe-6312-a on it . DOes anyone know how to tell if this is a 28oz?Or would ift be safe to say that as long as I use pre 1980 parts ,that I would be safe on starting my 302 engine. Thanks for all the help,twr71.
As long as your 302 is pre-1980, you need 28oz imbalance parts. You don't want to mix and match, that wold be a disaster waiting to happen. The pulleys aren't as critical as the flywheel, crank, and harmonic balancer all being from the same type engine, 28/50. The critical part about pulleys is that they have to match each other, and the accessory bracketry. Ford made about a million different variations of those over the years.
These guys make a ton of flywheel/flex plate products, excellent quality, and supply many of the tranny shops. They list the ring gear you need; try putting in '69 Mustang 302, the one you need is I believe FRG-164N:

I'm pretty sure to change tooth count you have to have the matching block plate (sheet metal on rear of block) and the corresponding starter. But My Facts are just like Your Facts, dredged out of the abused cells..
