Have a 1999 7.3 powerstroke and bought a edge evalution programmer but now my buddy tells me that it puts a lot of strain on my tranny is this true or is he selling me a hog.
I have been running and Edge Evolution for some time on Tow and had a problem with my torque converter self destructing down in North Carloina.
I had it repaired down their and the fellow that owns Tri-County transmissions was very good in explaining the issue and that the stock Torque converters don't take much and of course this one went just after the 5 year warranty ran out. Anyway, what he did was put the dual clutch torque converter from the F-550 into my Transmission (on a 2002 Excursion with 7.3 L PSD). It shifts more firmly than the old one but he said this will be fine, unless I want to get really crazy building a race truck.
I have had no problems since desite stacking an Edge Juice with Attitude on top of the Evolution. I have run it and even towed a tiny trailer on Extreme with no issues at all.
Easiest way to help your tranny is a mod'ed accumulator valve body or a shift kit (accomplishes the same thing), and a better cooler. For some reason, Ford put smaller coolers on the 7.3s than they did on the V10s. Go figure. You can get a real nice cooler from Bob Riley HERE, and you can get a VB from John Wood Transmission or Brian's Truck Shop. Or of you think you can handle it, put in a TransGo kit yourself. As Bill mentioned, syn fluid isn't a bad idea either because it handles the heat better, so it will last a bit longer than dino. Your choice.
However, gauges are a must when you start running tunes so you don't melt a piston or overheat the tranny. Especially towing with hot tunes. The boost gauge is good as well so you know what your engine is doing, and watch for loss of boost, etc. My $0.02...
