I dont think the limited slip is working. I had the tire right tire in light snow and the the left tire on pavement and could not get it out with out looking the hubs the first time. Last night I was on hard packed dirt going up a slight grade at the light show and had to get out and lock the hubs. I was in a line of cars and trucks, that was embarassing. How can I tell if the limited slip is working or not. Should I just take it the dealer and have them check it? I have the 250 FX4 CC.
I searched the threads and saw where a few have had problems with rear end and having to be replaced.
It's real easy to check. Simply jack up one side of the rear diff and leave in neutral. If you can spin the jacked up wheel, the limited slip is not working right. Mine does the same thing and it will be going in the week after next. I bought a limited slip not a one-wheeler-peeler!!
This is normal for a limited slip. It will work when both wheels are on a slippery surface.
If you want real traction, get an ARB!
And jacking one wheel up and spinning it by hand does not mean the LS diff isn't working.
I don't know how many times I heard that as a tech.............
Sorry to hi-jack the thread BUT:what is an"ARB" Where can you get it and how much?Mine does a bit of the same.By the way it helped alot when I put about 500 pounds of tube sand it the back.Got it from home depot for $3.50 a tube.

Factory limited slips do not last very long. They never have. I would(if the finances are there) switch it out for better traction devices - Full time units-
True trac - Detroit Locker - Auburns
Or Part time - ARB- OX - Elocker -all available depending on applications of course -
Look at spending up to 1000.00 per axle installed.
In my F250 the LS sucks .I get stuck all the time even in 4 h with only 2 wheels spinning( 1 in the front 1 in the rear). In my e 350 drw the LS works awesome.I usually am doing some thing stupid that gets me stuck any way but i figured with LS that i d have the 2 back tires movin but alas mostly only one .when thier isnt too much pressure both will spin.Wierd i guess that boils down to wrong ratio of friction additive in the rear end from the factory.
My 99 has 100 000kms on the factory LSD.
And I live in the ice and snow so I get a chance to see every day how its working.
My rear LSD is the BEST I've ever owned in a LSD device.
I changed the fluid last year as maintenace.
My FJ40 has dual ARB's but they cost over $1000 each and I did the install myself.
They simply are the best (in my opinion, for my uses) locker out there.
But I have zero complaints about my Ford LSD. Worked great today in 2wd coming into town through some good sized drifts.
I should get a new set of tires though.
Sask, they say there's an exception to every rule and you must have that one exceptional factory LS to the "they suck" rule.... I changed the fluid in my diffs when I put the M-H covers on and didn't use any friction modifier. The LS still sucks, no chater on turns to indicate the need for it and one-wheel drive on even so much as wet grass. I asked on a recent post about traction devices and when I can spring for the cash I'm going to go with Detroit Tru-Tracks front and rear.
Had mine replaced with only 15,000 miles! Still does not work very well but is better. I can still get one wheel to spin in the snow. Now how can that be? When I get some cash will replace with something else. Not sure what yet! ARB up front and something else in back.
I was going to say try changing the fluid and don't add friction modifier until you drive it to see if it needs it. If you turn and you hear chatter add half (2 oz.) and see how it does. If it still chatters (which is very unlikely considering your description), add the rest. Here is a link, if you need instructions: http://guzzle.rbmicro.com/rdiff.html
For a stock LS I think mine does OK in my FX4. There is no doubt they will open up if one is on a slick surface and the other on dry pavement. I would definately rather have an OK mech. limited slip device than a brake activated limited slip like my old truck did. (04 Nissan Titan) It did have the electric locker but it could only be used in 4LO. I like being able to predict what my truck is going to do.
